I just listened to the iTunes preview of Requiem, and I didn't like it at all. The snippet that I heard (over one minute's worth) sounded over-the-top gunked up with sound effects, etc. I know the recording is a different beast from the live show, but I believe the recording should capture the spirit of what was done live. I saw the show Sunday night, my first time seeing it on Broadway after twice at Second Stage. I loved the show and the performances just as much, and I hope I'm not disappointed with the completed recording. I guess I won't have long to wait!
With a song like Only Us, which can stand on its own as a pop song, I can see jazzing up the arrangement a bit to conform to current pop music tastes. But Requiem is so specific to the show, I have a hard time hearing it as a Top 40. So why mess with it?
