Singer-songwriter Deborah Cox, who starred in the title role of the Broadway production of Aida, will portray the late, legendary Josephine Baker in the new Broadway-bound musical Josephine, according to The New York Times.
Theatre and production dates will be announced at a later time.
The new musical based on the life of the iconic entertainer who dazzled Paris audiences will be directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely, who was Tony-nominated for Best Choreography for both The Life and Smokey Joe's Cafe.
Josephine features music by Steve Dorff, lyrics by John Bettis and a book by Ellen Weston and Mark Hampton.
Born in 1973, Deborah Cox began her professional career at the age of 12, playing small Toronto clubs before attending a performing arts school. She later signed with Arista Records, and her first single, "Sentimental," was released in 1995. Her second single, "Who Do U Love?," sold over 500,000 copies. Cox's recording of "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" from her album "One Wish" topped the R&B charts for 14 weeks. She also had another Top 10 hit with "We Can't Be Friends." She also held the No. 1 Billboard Dance position with her remake of Phil Collins' "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven." Aida marked Cox's Broadway debut.
I'd be interested in seeing this. Deborah Cox was a fantastic Aida. Great voice, and really good acting (much better than I anticipated).
I'm intrigued. She also blew me away as Aida. I went, expecting to see a meh performance and got a great voice and good acting. She really gave her all on that stage.

Amazing she's so great!!!
She's actually performing in NYC on Monday October 5th as a part of the Broadway in South Africa Benefit Concert. It's one of her new charities.
Check out their website : www.broadwayinsouthafrica.org. It has more information about their concert and about Deborah's appearance
it's about time!!
Wow, that's really good news. I also agree that it's high time she return to the boards.

Singer-songwriter Deborah Cox, who starred in the title role of the Broadway production of Aida, will portray the late, legendary Josephine Baker in an upcoming developmental lab production of the new musical Josephine.
The new musical based on the life of the iconic entertainer who dazzled Paris audiences will be directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely, who was Tony-nominated for Best Choreography for both The Life and Smokey Joe's Cafe.
Kenneth Waissman will produce the workshop, which is scheduled for May 16-June 5, according to an Equity casting notice.
Josephine features music by Steve Dorff, lyrics by John Bettis and a book by Ellen Weston and Mark Hampton.
The musical, according to a previous press notice, is "inspired by actual events, and takes place in Paris between 1939 and 1945: Josephine Baker is queen of the Paris music halls, involved in a liaison with Crown Prince Gustav VI of Sweden and secretly serving her adopted country in the French Resistance. Her heroic work during the war brings her the self-worth she so vainly sought in fame, money and the arms of royalty."
She was better than I anticipated in Aida as well, but I wouldn't really equate that with "great." She was better than I expected and at moments more than decent, but my expectations were essentially naught.
never mind
The first post is from 2 years ago? The musical will open in 2023.
Hahaha... thanks for the heads-up, blaxx. Even that South Africa concert was in 2009, just like the thread!
Doing a Google search, seems this September 8, 2009 date is and was the ONLY time this 'Deborah Cox as Josephine Baker on Broadway' was ever mentioned anywhere. There never was a follow-up or any update at all.
Ouch!
Many still think that Phylicia Allen was born to play La Josephine:
