Is it just me, or are people way more demanding right now in the theater?
give us a cast recording with alternates performing!
give alternate performers their own playbill!
give us a proshot! Give us a movie of “x” musical!
Like I understand accessibility but I feel like at a certain point it moves to unrealistic expectations and being demanding
I think "demanding" is rather harsh. I would say "hopeful" or "wishful". One can dream, can't one?
Idk I think we’ve always been like this - we just can’t get enough of the art! I guess the idea of recording alternates isn’t something that I remember being common but trust me 15 years ago theatre fans were always asking for the next cast recording, film adaption or favourite casting choice! And it has often been unrealistic. Sometimes your dreams come true though and it keeps you coming back for more.
Almost every global actress who played Norma Desmond in SUNSET BLVD during its original run had an official EP of them singing the main songs. Betty Buckley, Petula Clark, to even the 1st National Tour’s Linda Balgord.

You forgot the "alternates should perform in big promo spots like the Macy's parade!"
I don't necessarily people are "demanding" these things... I think on places like these boards, people just like to speculate/ make suggestions/ engage in wishful thinking...

I think a part of it too is that it's become much harder/more expensive for folks to travel to New York and see shows since the pandemic, and so to me at least that explains why people are so desperate for cast recordings (even if asking for one for each new cast is a bridge too far).

Yes, I believe the op reading some of these kind of messages wrong and that’s probably due to social media being hard to gauge the tone of the words used. It’s not hard to use context clues though and assume people are not demanding these kind of actions, but rather hoping/wishing they do.

You're right. I think I have for most of them, but there are some people vehemently demanding alternates get their own tracks on things like cast recordings, their own playbills-be realistic. How often could that happen? Especially if it's a short stint, it's not realistic

*sigh* I'm sorry, but audiences are getting way too demanding. From asking people to record additional tracks for understudies, standbys etc. to asking for more performances on different dates-a recent development I've seen where people are like "add a show on "x" day so I can squeeze in all the shows I want to see!" Even if it's a joke, I don't appreciate it. It's like you're jokingly saying you're more important than the performers.
Asking on a discussion board is not being demanding. It's wishful thinking. It's not like they are picketing or banging on the doors of decision makers.

Aren't you just attacking certain Funny Girl fans? I can't think of another show where there are even suggestions about this (replacement stars in ALW shows aren't alternates, and I don't think anyone "demanded" them--it's was just part of keeping the franchise going to release as many alternative recordings as the market would bear).
For God's sake, Benko literally saved that show. Without her, it would have closed before Lea Michele could take over. That makes her directly responsible not just for the show's success but giving Michele a chance to save her career. For people to say, in this incredibly unique circumstance, "They should have given her a track" is just to say "Considering her contributions, couldn't they have been a bit generous? We know it's not a thing that is done, but isn't this case unique?"
If feel like this thread was just created to bash people who aren't satisfied with Michele.
Edited: I want to add that the reason people are "demanding" more pro shots is because, recently, there have been a lot more pro shots. So they figure "These other shows got one, could we get one for this show I like?" Maybe that show isn't the financial juggernaut that would make a pro shot practical, but that just means a lot of fans aren't as keyed into the business aspects of a Broadway as some of their more immersed counterparts.

I think we get it! Good luck on that hill, it can certainly be lonely.
More to the point, unless you can provide actual examples from here, Reddit, or wherever you're seeing these "demands", I'd re-adjust the way you're interpreting them. To use "demanding" is a high bar -- that's a very active word you're using, and a bunch of (essentially) anonymous messages on the internet, from folks excited about performers or performances, doesn't quite rise to "demanding" anything. If boycotts, protests, or any organized action was taking place, then the word "demanding" would be warrented. But as it stands, I don't think this has any effect whatsoever on anyone actually involved.

Geez.
You're so demanding.
Gotta have protests and petitions or other organized action to legitimize use of a phrase?
See what I did there?

If you are unable to gauge the tone of these certain messages you are seeing, then the internet is not for you.

Cute! But hey -- one hyperbolic statement (the OP) deserves another, right?![]()
