A24's first movie musical (formerly titled F***ing Identical Twins) is coming. I could not be more excited for everything about this.

Maybe put Movie in the subject line as well. I thought this was going to be a stage show.
Oh man I listen to a lot of podcasts where Aaron and Josh guest, they are unhinged, hysterical, and have such quick brains. People still talk about how the UCB show was the funniest thing they’ve seen. I really can’t wait for it this it sounds crazy in the best way.
When I read this thread title— for some reason my mind immediately thought they were making a musical about the movie Dick with Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. I have no Idea why, I haven’t thought about/seen that movie since the early aughts. Hahaha.

This will premiere at Toronto Film Festival:
The Toronto International Film Festival pulled the curtain off their lineup for their Discovery and Midnight Madness sections with notable titles respectively teeing off both programmes’ opening nights: Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl and Borat director Larry Charles’ Dicks: The Musical from A24.
Dicks the Musical, due out on Sept 29 in theaters, follows two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp) who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. Pic stars Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God. Music is by Karl Saint Lucy with an original score by Lucy and Marius de Vries.

Watching the trailer, I don’t think that there’s ever been a film I want to see more than this. lol
It’s giving Barb and Star campy vibes. Excited to check this out.

Aaron was one of our babysitters when my kids were young and he is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met & a truly delightful person. I screamed when I saw the trailer today.

Wow... early reviews are GOOD!

This is an unrelenting explosion of comedy. Sharp and Jackson swing big and broad, fitting both their Dumb and Dumber-style jokes and the musical theater song numbers. Jackson in particular recalls '90s-era Jim Carrey with his rubber-faced mugging and eccentric elocution. There's also gross-out gags, provocative punchlines, juvenile nudity, and Bowen Yang as a gay and glam God, who drops iconoclastic jokes that had the crowd at the TIFF World Premiere absolutely screaming with laughter. Joining this ensemble in mocking the archetype "alpha males" is Megan Thee Stallion in a supporting role that is fierce and fiercely funny, climaxing in a rap number that's wild fun.
To Jackson and Sharp's credit, every song in Dicks is hilarious, jam-packed with so many jokes that the movie demands repeat viewing to catch them all. But it's a stroke of brilliance to bring in Broadway stars Mullally and Lane for several songs. Throwing on a trove of fashion accessories and a lisp, Mullally makes a meal of wacky lyrics — and even turns her uncanny ability to hold a note into a punchline. Meanwhile, Lane— who stole scenes earlier this year as a plucky papa in another A24 movie Beau is Afraid — gives his all, committing to bit after bit — and spit after spit!

Thanks for sharing this! Though I'm still very interested in this, I don't know how much I can stomach the Jim Carreyesque facial contortions and ticks. They didn't do anything for me in the 90s either.

Can't wait to see this. Bowen had Sharp & Jackson on his podcast yesterday and couldn't have been funnier (and had good things to say about Nathan, Mulllally, and Thee Stallion)

Saw this last night and every single song got applause from the crowd. And I've been listening to the album today non-stop. I have never seen a funnier musical!
I thought this was pretty weak stuff, though Lane comes close to salvaging it. Just mostly stale, starting with the title. "(Shocking Word)! The Musical." What! A musical?? How silly! Very early 2000s, as is the rest of it.
This is so funny and deranged, I cannot believe it's playing in (select) multiplexes. It has strong musical comedy songs and the performances are great, though I just kept wishing I was watching it on stage instead of on screen.
Between this and THEATER CAMP, it's been a great year for show folk making niche independent films. Though, anecdotally, Theater Camp has a broader appeal than this to folks who aren't preconditioned to love it.

For some reason this isn't playing ANYWHERE in Chicago - I can't imagine why! I'm so sad, I was really looking forward to it.

Alamo Drafthouse has got it, looks like.
Seeing this tomorrow night at Alamo (NYC) and I honestly am going into this blind. But the trailer I've been seeing at Alamo the last few times is so deranged it's just calling out to me!

I saw this over the weekend and had high hopes. Unfortunately, I thought it was really weak. The lyric-writing is especially amateur-ish.
Truly one of the most crass, disgusting, nonsensical, absurd, and hysterical things I’ve seen all year. Is this a high quality, well constructed movie musical? No… but I recommend it anyway. My jaw was agape at some points. I can’t believe they convinced Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally to sign up for this. We all walked out of the theater smiling asking “What did we just watch?”
Big rec, but know what you are signing up for. Turn your brain off (way way way off) and just laugh.
