My understanding is that Class was cut because it would have been the only number that wasn't taking place in Roxie's head, which would have screwed up the whole concept.

An example of a song being recorded and filmed, then cut and not included on the sdtk is Only With You from Nine.

Regarding Rainbows, I read on playbill that it was re-purposed for the Baker and The Baker's Wife but was ultimately jettisoned.

I would LOVE for them to include the Witch's new song. I have read in multiple places that Meryl did record it even though it was cut.

....but the world goes 'round

I, too, was under the impression that "The Ballad..." was cut for strictly artistic/cinematic reasons (4th wall breaking narrative not traditionally well served by film technique, etc.) I've heard many mentions, including Sondheim's.

Yes, but all of them after the fact, in promotion for the film.

If anyone has definitive footage that explains it was budgetary, I'd like to hear/see it. It seems odd that such a decision would be made based on an actor's emergency. I am ready to be convinced, I'd like to know the facts.

Really? Burton and Depp are so far up each other's asses they probably haven't smelled fresh air in a decade, and you're shocked Tim would cut a whole arc because his pal's kid was sick?

The Ballad story is true.

There was an interview with Christopher Lee, who was cast as one of the singing ghosts in the Ballad. He said he was a bit nervous to do it, but it had so many lyrics and such. But said he never had to because they were cut in production, were cast and prepped but not shot when production shut down for a few days.

But if they were cut prior to shooting, there still would've been orchestra and vocal tracks recorded.

Hi Kad, that's how the subject came up. I mentioned on the previous page that I hoped this extended recording of ITTW will include Streep's cut song, because the extended soundtrack of Sweeney disappointed me by not including the Ballad, which was pre-recorded but not filmed.

BTW, the fact that the Ballad was pre-recorded is more evidence that the decision to cut it came late in the process, not earlier when the decision was made not to include Sweeney's choral portions, which were never recorded. As I said, the Ballad was to be sung as a quintet or sextet by the ghosts of Sweeney's dead customers.

But wouldn't the fact that the tracks have never been released in any way also indicate that they possibly never were made? We've never seen any evidence of that recording session.

And why would Lee be nervous about the ballads? He wouldn't have been singing them live on set.

People involved with the production, including some of the actors, said at the time that it had been pre-recorded. And the scenes are in the finished screenplay which used to be available online. But all that was seven years ago and I don't have any sources to quote now. Read my posts on the previous page about how it came to be cut at the last minute, well into the film's shooting.

The recording of the Ballads may have been demoed but did not make it to the final recording sessions. There are probably scratch tracks but not final recordings.

Pre-records don't usually include full or final orchestrations, even for songs. Those are typically recorded in the post-production phase (along with the rest of the score) to a final edited film.

Weird that they only name 1 person from each song. I was worried only the Wolf would sing HLG until I saw "It Takes Two"

Thank you for the list. The score seems to be fairly complete, when comparing it to the show. As "No More" is listed as an instrumental, should we assume that the Baker and his father no longer sing it? That would be a shame, one of the emotional highlights of the show. But still, I'm almost elated to see that the score is nearly intact.

I never expected this to be filmed, particularly after so many false starts and announcements, so now we have only to wait and be hopeful.

I wish...

I'm glad to see that "Ever After" is still there as an instrumental over the scene it's supposed to be in. It probably wouldn't have worked with the lyric but I can see it being perfect as just the background music for that scene.

Also it's now being released on the 15th.

No More is not in the film. It has been replaced with a dialogue scene and underscoring of the song. While a beautiful song, think about how that would slow the finale of the film up.

Sondheim wrote the new song "Rainbows" to be sung by the Baker and his Wife for the earlier planned versions of the film that never made it.

I'm sorry "No More" will not be in the movie.

When my friend Reed Jones, the original Skimbleshanks in the Broadway production of Cats, was dying of AIDS, he had us ask a bunch of performers he had worked with and known to sing at a memorial we were to hold for him, onstage at the Winter Garden.

Much to our surprise, "No More" is the song he asked us to ask Mandy Patinkin to sing. (We didn't even know Reed and Mandy knew each other, but apparently, they once had a long conversation about the song and its meanings at a barbecue at Sandy Duncan and Don Correia's--a first birthday celebration, I believe, for Sandy and Don's twins.)

Anyways, Mandy's response was "Of course I'll sing at Reed's memorial, but why 'No More'? I guess it'll have to be just one more question..."

And so I love this song, and I will miss it.

^The song "No More" will not be in the film but from what I heard from the samples, Sondheim's beautiful music remains in the final film exactly where the song originally was.

PJ - that's a lovely story. When I was a kid I skipped over "No More" - I was a dolt.

It was hard to resist listening to each of those 90 sec iTunes samples. I did listen to the Prologue, Stay With Me, Hello Little Girl, Last Midnight, and No One Is Alone. So, you know, just a few. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at how good everything sounds. I got the false impression they were going to drown everything in bombast with a 100+ orchestra. While the film orchestra obviously dwarfs the Broadway one, I'm quite pleased at how subtle and tasteful everything remains. For the most part, the actors sound great, even Depp. Something about 'Last Midnight' seems a tad off - it feels almost too lilting, but that's the arrangement, not Meryl who sounds very good.

I agree that Last Midnight sounds different from the usual stage version. It seems slower and perhaps a bit more sinister than it usually is. It doesn't sound inferior, just different (I actually like it quite a lot). Those pulsing strings add that sinister touch. And it seems like it goes back to the usual at the end.
