How is this scene done in the musical? I can't believe there would be actual nudity in a broadway musical. Please explain@!
there's been actual nudity in many Broadway plays and musicals through out the years. perhaps more plays then musicals, but I don't know the exact statistics - or even if such statistics have been compiled, but there was a lot of full frontal male nudity in TAKE ME OUT, for example, so nudity isn't really anything new nor was it then. THE FULL MONTY on Broadway used lights behind the actors that were so bright that you could not really see any naughty bits, depending, of course, on where you sat. There have been a few regional productions that have, according to rumor, eliminated this trick. I, personally, have not seen them...
There has been nudity in Broadway musicals/plays before.
I played Harold recently in a regional production, and we were indeed naked. However, we used a lighting trick (similar to the one used in the Broadway production) so the audience couldn't see "anything," although I heard from some people sitting on the far sides of the theater that they got a free show!
By the way, being naked onstage, despite my initial terror, was actually very liberating. Now I can do anything in front of an audience!

The answer to your question is yes they do go "The Full Monty" at least they did on the national tour. I can state this as a fact because I was the wig supervisor on that tour. The above post is correct it is done with a lighted sign that blinds the audience at a certain cue. If you get a chance to see the tour you will notice red g-strings on stage at the end. The actors come off during the blackout and don bathrobes for the curtain call. It is one show that does not tolerate cameras or recording devices. We would go into the house and claim cell phones and disposable cameras. I know some regional productions have used blackouts or have had a lighted floor panel but in my opinion the sign is the best. It is one of my favorite tours I have worked on.
Hair and Passion are two big musicals with nudity.
We also used a giant lit-up sign, and had little mini-fireworks go off around it when we struck the final (naked) pose.
Did any of you working on the show happen to work on the tour that recently came through Thousand Oaks and Pasadena?... I think it was Thousand Oaks.

That was my old tour. I worked on it last season. I believe it is out untill Dec. Very talented people. Alot of the principals came back from last season.
There was an origional scene in The Sound of Music(on broadway), in which we see Maria changing in her room after the party. She was indeed fully nude. However, the scene was cut, but then later added into the movie. However, Julie Andrews refused to do a nude scene, so "undergarments" appeared in her contract instead.

Yeah it was a great time...rough schedule sometimes but great experience...
My recollection was that at the end they had police hats over their private parts. I am I mistaken?
that was what they did in the movie to avoid showing the full monty...

Patrick Wilson tells a story of one night in the show when they went the "full monty", usually there is a light effect that obscures most of the goods from view.....well, one particular night the light cue didn't go and they were all exposed for the world to see.
I would have sold my soul to be there for that.

The NSMT production REALLY goes The Full Monty. I'm talking standing there for about five seconds with the hats in the air before the blackout. Not only can you see it all, I don't think they even try to prevent it.
lucky too... gettin' to see Sebastian Arcelus and Darren Ritchie... even for just five seconds...

I saw Full Monty at NSMT tonight. Oh yeah, you could see everything. No lighting tricks. I was hoping Bill English (Malcolm) and Sebastian Arcelus (Ethan) would be facing me...but it was Darren Ritchie (Jerry) instead. Oh well.
ETA: It was really more like one second, two tops...but it was more than enough time.
