I always thought that Vanessa Williams would make the PERFECT Velma Von Tussle. Yes, I know she’s African American, but if you put enough Makeup on her, she could easily pass for white.
Because in a show about racism, you want to HIDE an African American?? I get what you mean TYPE-wise, but the statement is a bit odd.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! WHAT, WHAT, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? The kid's voice is way too thin for this part. And it's not written for a pop-sounding voice. You need a real rock and roller. Fans expect a certain type of voice in this show; that's why Glenn Carter (in 2000) and Josh Young (in 2012; different role, but you get my point) did not fly well in terms of word of mouth. American audiences for JCS don't tend to respond to a restrained approach. American audiences want their Jesus and Judas to be willing to cough up a lung for them in the course of the show. This kid would sing like Hunter Parrish if he did that.
Also, this is gonna sound totally weird but if Next to Normal had been written a good 30 years earlier, I think Betty Buckley and/or Elaine Paige would've KILLED it as Diana!

Bette Midler in "Hello Dolly" Bernadette Peters succeeding Midler in "Hello Dolly" Aaron Tveit in "Naked Boys Singing"/ditto Ricky Martin Christopher Sieber as Miss Trunchbull in "Matilda The Musical" Rachel Bay Jones in anything Kristin Chenoweth as Madame Morrible in WICKED
I wish "Wicked" was written in the mid-90's because I think Alice Ripley would have made such an interesting Elphaba. I also think Betty Buckley would have made a terrific Elphaba. Bernadette Peters probably has the soprano notes to have mad a great Glinda back in the day.
"I saw Pavarotti play Rodolfo on stage and with his girth I thought he was about to eat the whole table at the Cafe Momus." - Dollypop
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
