Posted: 7/28/10 at 6:04pmWasn't the 97/98 National Tour also rumored to be a possible Broadway Revival? Somewhere in this house I have a flyer that went out to Season Ticket holders in Rochester, NY for the tour of Dreamgirls, and I am 99% sure it has "Prior to its triumphant return to Broadway" on the front- I'll have to dig it out.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 6:40pmThey just had to cancel their D.C. dates because of lack of sales. I don't think its broadway bound.
#4Dreamgirls - Broadway
Posted: 7/28/10 at 6:43pmI just read about the cancellations and the luke warm reviews. I don't see Broadway in its future.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 6:50pmI actually had a conversation with someone who is in the tour and he said that the producers are aiming for a Broadway bow next season.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 7:03pmI would love to see the Menier Chocolate factory tackle this show. That would mean a well thought through production which would probably transfer to the West-End and Broadway.

It booked the Broadhurst for January.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 7:05pmAccording to someone involved with the show a few months ago, they had Usher on board for a Broadway run of the show next year. I dint know if that's still the case though. Him plus another big name or two would solve the low sales problem and get butts into seats.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 7:15pmBroadhurst in January? Hmm, I could see that working. Bring in Usher or someone with a large name, and you will get the sales you are looking for.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 7:34pmUsher wants this. Bad. And don't be surprised to see his name, too, as "producer."

Posted: 7/28/10 at 7:42pmIf this were to happen and Usher were to be a part of it I would assume he would be Jimmy Early not Curtis? That would suck for Chester Gregory who seems to be the one getting consistent raves for his performance as Jimmy.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 7:47pmI would hope it would be for Curtis and not Jimmy... the guy playing Curtis on the tour just wasn't that great of a singer/actor and I didn't care for his performance... Chester was just great

I think the tour might as well be a Menier production, its extremely minimalistic, in that the only actual set piece was a table and chairs and the video screens just compensated (quite well, actually[see: 9 to 5 for bad video screen usage]) for scenery.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 8:30pmThe current touring production is a empty techno spectacle wanna be. Sorry. I love this show. But it would be a total shame if they revive this show on Broadway with this flat and dull rendition.
#15Dreamgirls - Broadway
Posted: 7/28/10 at 8:42pmWell I've only seen the tour and the movie, so I never had anything else to compare it to. What I saw was a nice revival of an amazing show.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 9:16pmYou haven't seen DREAMGIRLS if you've never experienced the original Broadway production. No other rendition has topped it. Not the film and certainly not this touring production.

Posted: 7/28/10 at 9:34pmYes, what this show about 'the Motown sound' and 'the black experience in America' needs is for a bunch of Brits to rework it. Sheesh. Wait- someone is going to go the "they all play instruments" route next.

^Excuse me, you're mixing up which director's stereotype is which. That's John Doyle, Show Rapist at large for the Donmar Warehouse. Robert Longbottom takes perfectly fine shows and "glitzes them up" for ****'s sake.
Get your facts right!

Why would you want a minimalist production of this show.
It is all about glitz and glamour...seeing Deena play a trumpet would not be that attractive.. I love this show , but it is all about the SHOW in showbiz
#24Dreamgirls - Broadway
Posted: 7/29/10 at 12:26pmI wasn't alive for the original, but I still thought this production was pretty awful.
