Posted: 4/8/08 at 8:21pmIt's no rumor, it's falsified information. There are no age restrictions (unless you're under 4) imposed at any Broadway or off-Broadway house.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 8:39pmYankeefan, the London production had stage seats, so I'm assuming this production will as well.

I read the play, and thought it was fine, but I imagine the passion and sexuality of the horse riding scenes doesn't come off as well in text as it does on the stage.
The nudity in the play (as I read and understood it) is only at the end, during his scene with the love interest. (Her name escapes me right now.)

Posted: 4/8/08 at 9:20pmYes, there was nudity in the original, and in the film. Unlike THE GRADUATE, it's an integral part of the show.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 9:24pmIt's a great play - too bad most of the audience will be there just to see Harry Potters Wand.

Posted: 4/8/08 at 9:36pmI know somebody who saw it in London and sat onstage, so I assumed there would be onstage seats for this as well. And I'm not joking about wanting to sit onstage, but only if it's cheap, not for the other reason. =)

Posted: 4/9/08 at 1:58amthey (the harry potter fans) might be going to see his wand, but if it really is a great play, then they'll walk out of the theater getting more than they bargained for.....nothing wrong with that.

I saw the original production, with replacements Anthony Perkins and Tom Hulce. (I am still in love with Tom Hulce to this day.) It is terrific play and I can only imagine that Radcliffe will make an amazing Alan.
But some posters may be right about Griffiths -- the psychiatrist goes through a sexual/emotional awakening as well, and Griffiths does not exude that kind of thing. I think the critical response to him in London was a little tepid, and that might be the reason.

Since obviously nudity is the #1 talking point of this show, could someone expand on how this was handled in the original production or in London? I mean is it done with lighting such that you only see a sillouette of the characters from behind, are they flapping around front in center for 10 minutes, or (likely) something in between? Is it overexaggerated by the media, or is it actually a big deal (not just in the perspective of the show, but in how risque it comes across)?
Not that it will affect my desire to see the show either way--I just want a better understanding of what all the fuss (is/will be) about.
Oh, and dare I say, I think the wrong Harry Potter actor(ess) is appearing in this :)

I seem to remember that when the original production ran on Broadway, there was an age restriction. My friend and I wanted to see it but I seem to remember we were to young too get in without a parent. I could be wrong.
TonyVincent, I think you see everything.

If it is done right, the boy and girl are nude for almost a full ten minutes ... no simulated sex (although seduction is the girl's intent) just the nudity.
The end of Act One is far more sexually charged as ***SPOILER*** Alan come to orgasm while riding Nugget the horse.

"YankeeFan007- I know that, but someone told me that they don't let anyone under 18 in without an adult for avenue q, and that they expected the same would be done for EQUUS. Just a rumor"
Avenue Q has no such policy. Adult nights at Spelling Bee did, however.

Take a look at the pricing:
Orchestra: $116.50
Mezzanine (Rows A-H): $116.50
Mezzanine (Rows J-L): $66.50
Chop off five bucks for Wednesday matinees. That's got to be a record high price for a play.

He'll be in it for the full run. He's the only reason it's coming to Broadway.

Phil, I love Tom Hulce too :)
Tony, in London it was all front and center. However, as other posters have said, it really is necessary in the context of the play. I don't think it's that big a deal, considering how crucial a scene it is. It doesn't seem sensational at all.
But yes, my main problem with the London production was the sexual energy. I feel like with this play the audience should be on the brink of orgasm, so to speak, and it just never quite happened. I do think that that is largely due to Richard Griffiths sitting there watching everything. I kept looking at him and sn*ing (feeling terrible while doing so). There was tremendous promise, and I was really impressed with Radcliffe for the most part, but there was a distinct lack of that energy.

Thanks for the detail, Shbrt. Interesting. I wonder what the US audience reaction will be, whether there will be gasps/excitement (and not within the context of the show, just in seeing Harry Potter's wand, as some have said).
Since it's been done before in the UK, there may be less of that, but considering the UK has a more relaxed culture in regards to sex in entertainment and in public (Skins comes to mind), I guess the US audience will find it more risque/sensational.
