I saw Roger live and I was only cheering for her effort. I was certainly watching a performer struggle, she was not good.

When do you see her earlier or later in the run blaxx?
I'll end up seeing both of them, but I must admit, I'm much more excited for DeCicco, who can sing the score. What I've heard of Roger (screaming instead of singing, mostly) is not good. Quite frankly, it's painful to listen to.
Phew - glad Elena is doing Monday evenings - that's what I bought tix for right when they went on sale
ahh i'm so torn between elena and christina. i'm assuming from the press release that christina will be on during previews, as well?
i think i may just wait for some of your reviews during previews to decide which evita i want to see! if i were a rich man, i'd just see both.
Except for the two dates listed in the press release where Roger will do both performances, DeCicco will be doing all her scheduled performances. I assume she'll be the first cover as well, although apparently Roger rarely misses her scheduled performances.
Yeah, in the original press release announcing the cast, DeCicco was listed as the "Standby/ Alternate."

Weird Question, but do you think Christina will be easier to understand?
^ Yes, of course. Roger's heavy accent really affects her diction.

I only know Roger from the cast recording, but considering the fact that she learned the show phonetically, she's very easy to understand.
When do you see her earlier or later in the run blaxx?
It was around 4-5 months into the run.
And you can understand her just fine, that's really not her main problem.

Honestly, to all this people that are saying how horrible Elena is without even having seen her LIVE (yes LIVE, not just listened to a recording!!!!!!!!!!! You cannot judge a performance based on this only!!! Or even on a video, the quality of the performance will never is what it is live!), you have some nerve!
Of course she is easy to understand, and I'd like to know how many performers do what she has done. She's done theatre in italian and english and they've both been amazing.
It's a shame that people so close minded will miss out on seeing her as she's one of the best performers i've seen in a long time.

Yes it is Elpha and she also did theater in french in addition to the english, spanish and italian. I also find it strange how some performers get a vocal "pass" (Douglas Hodge, Frances Ruffelle, Bernadette Peters to a degree etc.) Because they convey such perfect emotion. Roger does that, she's an actress of the first class, heck i'd put her up there with Jan Maxwell, and Bernadette. Plus considering the revival is structured around her strengths you have to think thats going to play a big part.
Not sure where you've been, but Douglas Hodge and Bernadette Peters certainly haven't gotten a "pass" around here when it comes to their singing. There are a number of people who've criticized their singing. Frances Ruffele is rarely discussed, given that she hasn't done anything in NY in forever.
Comparing Elena Roger to 4 time Tony nominee Jan Maxwell is laughable.

Just because she hasn't been nominated to a tony (YET - but anyway how could she given that is the 1st TIME SHE WILL PERFORM ON BROADWAY... EHEM...) doesn't mean that she is not as good. Plus she did won an Olivier award in London.
This keeps showing me how close minded some of the people in this forum are, and how happy you are to start judging people based on nothing...

Especially given how much they lecture on giving performers a chance live Elpha it really is. As for Elena awards lets think shall we, she has won two ACE awards, The hugo award (the argentine tony). Has coauthored the liberetto in a show that she starred in as well. Created her own club act, got the process of auditions to get evita (no small feat), and has performed sondheim and excellently by all accounts, oh and add that pesky oliver nom i left out. Yeah so she kinda has gotten the equivalent of four tony awards. As for Doug and Bernie, i would say i compared to others they got off praticaly scot free. As for frances she's defnitly made out to be more of a singer than she is when discussed. So yes elena has the credits to back me up when i use jan as a example.

People on here and ATC constantly questioned Bernadette's vocal state and how erratic she was from performance to performance. To say that she "got off practicaly [sic] scot free" is a complete fabrication, but that wouldn't be the first time for you, would it? Like when you tried to convince everyone that Catherine Zeta Jones was universally panned and not the main draw when she was in Night Music?

Sorry that Elena Roger's 3 Olivier nominations (one resulting in a win) aren't enough for you. It's obvious that you really don't like her, but that statement is kind of ridiculous.

LOL LOL! Amen.

I plan on seeing Christina Decicco in the role, but I was wondering something that maybe someone can help me figure out...I know that Ms. Decicco has 2 scheduled performances per week, but who do you think will play Eva if Ms. Roger calls out during the week? I believe there are 2 understudies (Jessica Lea Patty and Laurel Harris). I'm not sure if the order is that an understudy will go on if the lead and standby/alternate can't OR if an understudy goes on when the lead calls out.
Christina is the official stand-by, so if Elena calls out, she'll perform.
Everyone should just wait until they actually see Elena Roger do the show here before they make judgements about her, even if you saw her in London. It's been five years since she last played this role, and her English has improved by complete leaps and bounds since then. I have a feeling she's going to be giving a much deeper and more fully realized performance on Broadway than she did in the West End, when she was already absolute dynamite.
