People, I happened to like Emilia Perez quite a bit, and it's disappointing to hear that some people don't like it because it's not built like a 'traditional' musical, but there is no way that it's going to win Best Picture. Best International Feature Film, yes, very likely, but not Best Picture. Anora, sadly, peaked too early. Now The Brutalist, whether it deserves it or not, has Oscar bait written all over it and I'm guessing it will triumph over the rest.
But if there were an award for Best Oscar Campaign that would surely go to Timothée's reps. That SNL appearance and all the subsequent press it has produced just as people are voting may have just pushed him ahead of Adrien Brody, the most traditional Best Actor performance of the bunch.
Regarding A Complete Unknown, I thought it was fine, but nothing extraordinary. But I grew up on tales of Bob Dylan's life from my father who is a big fan.
I haven't seen EP yet, even though I've been a fan of some of Audiard's previous films. They do tend to be extremely melodramatic - like 2012's Rust & Bone where Marion Cotillard is working at a sort of Sea World type place and get her legs chomped off by the Orca whales she trains, and then is helped to adjust to her new disability by screwing Matthias Schoenaerts... good gravy there are so many things on my life that could be cured by screwing Schoenaerts as well. I don't think there has ever been an Audiard film that makes logical sense.
I think Timothee pulled ahead when everyone found out that they used AI on The Brutalist. I don't care personally but many people think that should instantly disqualify any film for award contention. Plus, he studied and worked so hard for years to become Dylan. Adrian has been here before with a very similar film.

I happen to love Emilia Pérez- Wicked and Anora. All three are excellent movies that had me engaged throughout- which is a lot more than I can say for Queer- which I hated. Emilia Pérez is one of the most original and truly unique movies I have seen in a long time. I loved it- from the very beginning- and all throughout the flick it had me. Zoe deserves the Oscar- and she will get it. Loved Wicked- was into it every moment- and loved the relevant points it made. I loved Anora- thought it was a hoot- and it made some very salient points about infantalizing adult children- the negative affect that too much privilege can have- and the ending was a total release for Anora - and for the audience. Loved it. Great filmmaking for all three movies- BRAVO!

The AI thing for The Brutalist was pretty quickly debunked.
The latest bit of Oscar drama has been noting a lot of the not-very-nice (to be understated about it) things said during the campaign as well as in the past by Jacques Audiard and Karla Sofía Gascón. As someone who enjoyed Emilia Pérez quite a bit, there's some irony that a movie about a person whose downfall comes from their inability to change their deep-seeded personality flaws might lost traction at the Oscars due to a similar lack of self-awareness from its director and star.
Oh wow, I didn't read about that until today. That is really interesting and very ironic.
“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M,”
“The Chinese vaccine, apart from the mandatory chip, comes with two spring rolls, a cat that moves its hand, 2 plastic flowers, a pop-up lantern, 3 telephone lines and one euro for your first controlled purchase.”
“I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins,”
Regarding Selena Gomez: “She’s a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife.”
- Karla Sofía Gascón
Perez would have been fine if it didn’t ramble on about nothing for a good 30 minutes. Was it perfect far from it.
This it turning out to be more Emilia Pérez vs. Karla Sofia Gascon's Social Media Posts than Emilia Pérez vs. Wicked.
