Broadway Winter of Discontent

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

PlayItAgain, how accurate do you think the article is, with regards to the continuing viability of certain shows ? from RC in Austin, Texas

It will be interesting to see how certain shows handle the winter doldrums. Every year, it's the same thing. To me, it reminds me sort of like Broadway Darwinism.....survival of the fittest. I can only wish the struggling shows the best. from RC in Austin, Texas

yet all of these possible new shows listed are all too small to go into houses like the Broadway(Sister Act), Palace(Priscilla) or St. James(Clear Day). It would be really sad if these large houses sat empty until the Fall.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

What's so interesting about this article? As you yourself say "RC from Austin Texas" this is the same story every single year. This could in fact be the same story this guy's written the last ten years with show names and stars updated. Everyone is so ready to toll the death bell on Broadway but, as the story itself reports, producers are chomping at the bit for these shows to close so they can bring in the next batch.

There is an unusual number of sucky shows this winter. That's about all that's different. Box office always takes a dip this time of year.

Movie box office is down, too. No big holiday blockbusters, as with recent years past. It says more about the films in wide release now than it does about people losing interest in movies.

Same with Broadway.

Movie box office is also down because of the rampant amount of alternatives: Netflix, streaming video, very sophisticated home theatre systems — on top of the fact that there hasnt been a real blockbuster film this season.

Broadway might want to also look into some of these home entertainment venues.

And ticket prices keep going up while wages for most of us stay the same. That goes for movies and theater.
Movies used to be popular entertainment for the masses. Now a lot of people are lucky if they get to go once a year.
