FUUUUUUCK! I so wish I could see him go on as Pippin. I'm going to miss his mustache though.

Posted: 5/12/13 at 1:46pmI was wondering if he had to shave the stash to play Pippin. Question answered.

I'm going today, so I guess I'll see him. This is my first time seeing the show and I'm usually not happy when there's an understudy/swing playing a main role when I haven't seen the show before, but if people are eager to see him I guess that's a good sign. I just hope Patina's not out.

Posted: 5/12/13 at 6:44pmI don't have anything to which I can compare his performance, but I really did enjoy Erik Altemus as Pippin today. He has a wonderful voice (his "Corner of the Sky" was beautiful), and you're right, wonkit, he does have a great stage presence. I was impressed.

Posted: 5/12/13 at 10:12pmI would be so interested to see Erik as Pippin. I think he is great and really stood out to me with what little Lewis has to do in the show so I was very impressed. And he is gorgeous so that helps too :)

Posted: 5/12/13 at 10:36pmI have to say after seeing the show on Friday, that Thomas' voice did sound scratchy in some spots. I guess this means Colin Cunliffe was on a Lewis and Brad Musgrove went on in Cunliffe's track.

Posted: 5/12/13 at 10:37pmHe did a great job! And his mom got to see it on Mother's Day, how perfect! The whole show was really spectacular, Patina was stunning! As was mentioned by another posters, I too had nothing to compare Erik too as this was my first time seeing the show, I think it's a lock for revival, which is a shame considering my love for Drood, but it really is apples and oranges to me!

Based upon last week's grosses even if I read this 'in time' to make it to the theatre I doubt/wonder if I could have purchased a reasonably priced ticket.
I am going to hope that eventually Erik takes over the lead. I really would like to see him perform the role of Pippin!

Posted: 5/13/13 at 10:41am^They indeed had a sign at the Box Office stating that the performance was entirely sold out. Is MJT that uncomfortable in the role?

Will he be wearing a prosthetic mustache when he returns to the role of Lewis? Will they make him grow it back? Or will they just let him remain clean-shaven in case he has to go on again?
I don't think I've ever encountered something like this in the case of a featured player understudying a lead and having to change appearance notably.

Posted: 5/13/13 at 11:26am^The only recent case of this I remember hearing about was when Kyle Coffman went on for Deputy in Drood, he shaved, but had a mustache in the ensemble that was his own- not sure how they handled that. Also, regarding Drood Plachy and Walton remained very similar in appearance to the leads they understudied in Drood when they regularly appeared in the ensemble.

Thank you Phillytheatreguy10 for the sold out info. LOL
At least I don't feel like I could have gone but missed the opportunity. No way I would have even attempted to see if a premium ticket was available. Love it but not at that price.

Posted: 5/13/13 at 12:37pmA friend of mine tried to check if they had standing room tickets around 1pm once the understudy board had been posted, he was told standing room was sold right after rush and there were only two premium seats left.

Posted: 5/13/13 at 1:35pmWhen I saw Drood in its first weekend of previews, Jim Walton was wearing a beard, but by the time production photos were taken a few days later, he was cleanshaven. No idea why.

Considering Erik knew pretty early int he day that he was going on, I'm going to say Matthew's absence may have been planned; he may have flown home to the UK for Mother's Day.
