Exciting new production of Chicago

MidWestTheater said: "It looks like this was directed by Barrie Kosky, who directed one of the most epic pieces of musical theater I've ever seen. His production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Lyric Opera in Chicago was just astonishing.

Ouch! Having seen Bob Fosse’s original at least 10 times (with both Gwen & Chita and Reinking & Nemetz) as well as the still-running Encores! Concert staging and this production looks like a clustered cruise line production. They literally threw in every chorus person on that cruise ship on that stage for every moment. WTF?!! The low-end budget costumes to the “let’s feature everyone in every number” approach is horrifying.

Yes! Barrie Kosky directed this production of Chicago at the Komische Opera House in Berlin. Choreography by Otto Pichler. They also did a production of La Cage Aux Folles there earlier this year, which also got a NYT Critic's Pick. I love his style, its so bold and vibrant and camp! Germany seems to be loving musicals these days! La Cage directed by Barrie Kosky

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

No. Looks like an amateur cruise line production. The director completely missed the point of the show.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The Chicago sounds well-sung, but yes - looks like a “hits from the musicals” revue where the poor chorus was thrown so much bitsy-piecy choreography that they can’t keep it together.

What, exactly, is exciting about this? That was hella sloppy choreo.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

This looks like the director approached CHICAGO with absolutely ZERO understanding of the show. Appears to be poorly conceived and misconceptualized in every way.
