This title hasn’t been seen on Broadway since 1951, and I’m curious to see what Diane Paulus will bring to the table… and what her cast will be, if this is true!
If I recall the "uncensored" book that's been used in revivals, it's an extended satire of the Red Scare with some comical anti-Russian sentiment. Lots of pointed jokes about American mob mentality, etc, which is very pertinent today.
But I'm not sure well the silly genie and Orientalist elements would play today.
I’d much prefer Tina Landau direct this over Diane Paulus.
My father (AIDS)
My sister (AIDS)
My uncle and my cousin and her best friend (AIDS, AIDS, AIDS)
The gays and the straights
And the white and the spades
Could it be one of those one night only benefit events? I saw it when the Harlem Rep did it, but the genie elements were removed. Still, it has a beautiful score. Encores! should have done it in its heyday.
