Very odd, but I came out of "Big Fish" with the song "I Don't Remember You" from The Happy Time in my head. Don't know why, and I had not heard the song in literally years. When I got home from the theatre I found the song on YouTube and played it.

Is there a song in "Big Fish" that sounds like "I Don't Remember You?"

I've always loved Colored Lights

"Coffee Shop Nights" has a lyric by John Kander, actually. But it's still a nice song.

"Life Is" and "The Story of the Butterfly" from ZORBA

But I have to agree with the choice of "Cabaret" above. It's a hit song, written to be a hit song, and yet its lyrics are as clever and profound as the best of Sondheim.

One of my all time favorites "Why Can't I Speak?" from ZORBA. I just love it, at least as it appears on the OBC (it's very different on the revival recording and I don't like it as much).

Have to agree with the folks who mentioned "What Would You Do?". Lenya, singing a story she knew and understood so well, matched the wonderful lyric.... The depth of her "Go on, tell me... I will listen..." is a remarkable connection of song and actress.

I am not usually a Liza fan but her version of YES from "Liza with a Z" is amazing.

I Miss The Music shouldn't really qualify since it has a lyric by John Kander, but since he dedicated it to Fred Ebb, it still feels like one of their best songs. Brent Barrett's version of Seeing Things is quite beautiful, also Streisand's original I Don't Care Much, and Agnetha Faltskog's My Colouring Book is a heart breaker, and Don't Tell Mama always makes me smile. But the bridge from Go Back Home is just exquisite. Who knew that singing Oh me, Oh my... could conjure up such pain and yearning? Sheer class.

The Day After That is always a stunning song.
And I love Show People (only 'cause it was such a love song to Broadway)
but my favorite is Everybody's Girl. I know it isn't the best but it always always always puts a smile on my face.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

"Tomorrow Belongs to Me" is an amazing song, because you can't believe they wrote it. It seems like it was a song from the period based on a folk tune. Something that has just been around and they pulled it out of the air.

Very, very surprised -- and dismayed -- at the neglect here accorded the songs from 70, Girls, 70.

I listed but one, thinking other people would mention the others. But since no one has, I'll have to add Home, Broadway, My Street, Coffee in a Cardboard Cup, 70, Girls, 70, and The Caper.

Asking for ONE favorite song from any composer's portfolio seems unfair to all their other songs.

That said, I am partial to "First You dream from STEEL PIER and "Sometimes a Day Goes By" from WOMAN OF THE YEAR.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I think "Isn't This Better" from Funny Lady is one of their most beautiful songs.
