Ragtime all the way. LOVED Hamilton, but Ragtime is THE American musical in my book.

Ragtime followed closely by Hamilton. Assassins is also brilliant.

I like to watch 1776 on the 4th of July but from that list I think I actually like Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson the most.

Ragtime, which I also think is one of (if not THE) best musicals ever written.

Newsies for the score, 1776 for the book. Though I suspect Ragtime would top both of them if I ever actually saw it.

Yep, this was my second thought after "1776." "Follies" could be linked to American History. "Hair" and "Hairspray" are also placed in historical moments.

Look at the number of dirgicals, screeds, and lectures in that list. Grim and grimmer.
One would think there was never a happy moment in our entire history. Was there even one in all of these downers combined?
Nice way to celebrate our national holiday!

Loved the score for Ben F and Fiorello. Forgot about Civil War and did not think of these as they were not mentioned in the original post. I would definitely add these 3 to the list.

No, but seriously, I'm a Ragtime kind of guy.
