Favorite Sad Song. ( And defying Gravity is not sad. It's obnoctious.) — Page 6

Wow, the board has matured.
No, I'm serious. A few months ago this thread would have gone to 20 pages of meaningless flaming by now. Hooray for the forces of rationality!
Anyway, I have to back up the choice of "Will I?" It's one of the few songs from Rent that I actually like. That and the reprise of "I'll Cover You."
I'll add "Hedwig's Lament," from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," from My Fair Lady, and "Your Daddy's Son," from Ragtime. "Make Them Hear You" always struck me as more of an anthem than a sad song.

Ok, I dont want to go against this thread but the BEGINNING of Defying Gravity always gets me. I understand what you mean about the end. It is a little loud and annoying on the cd, it's much better live. Anyway, yeah its like when Elphaba first realizes she has to do things on her own. Its not really sad, its moving

Who will love me as I am - Side Show....it still makes me cry (or Norm Lewis on his knees singing "You Should be Loved" - but that's a visual).
It's been so long since I have seen Les Miz...is it "A Little Fall of Rain" when she dies in his arms - very sad.

NuggetMonkey I LOVE Ariadne too...though it isn't out on OCR yet which is why I didn't include it in my Sondheim list. I can't wait to hear it. As usual with Sondheim it is complex and haunting and I don't know that I can fully appreciate it until I've heard it more than 2-3 times. But even without a full headphone listen...it's lovely

haha you'll be surprised I'm saying this, but
"For Good" is on my list.
As is
"Maybe This Time" from Cabaret (hopeful, but sad), and "I Don't Care Much" from Cabaret.
"So In Love" from Kiss Me Kate (especially Brian Stokes Mitchell's rendition of the reprise...ohhhhhhh)
"I'd Give It All For You" from Songs for A New World (again, sad but hopeful)
"Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Phantom of the Opera
"Fine, Fine Line" from Ave Q
"But Not For Me" from Crazy for You
"I Know The Truth" from Aida
"The Winner Takes It All" and "Slipping Through My Fingers" from Mamma Mia
"All The Wasted Time" and "You Don't Know This Man" from Parade
"Who Will Love Me As I Am" and from Side Show
"Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime
"No One Knows Who I Am" from Jekyll and Hyde
"Come To Your Senses" from Tick Tick Boom
"My Bill" the Civil War
Did I mention I'm a sucker for the sad songs?

DEFYING GRAVITY couldn't possibly be called sad. If anything it's determined. And actually very positive.
My favourite sad songs are:
WHEN YOU'RE GONE - Rage Of The Heart
WHEN I LOOK AT YOU - The Scarlet Pimpernel
LOVING YOU - Passion
IN MY OWN LITTLE CORNER - Cinderella
ONCE UPON A DREAM (Jekyll) - Jekyll and Hyde

ahhh "I'll Forget You" from the Pimpernel...how did I forget that one?
Idina: Somehow I got myself to the stage, came out at the end of the show, and I had some kind of closure.
Some guy: You looked great!
Idina: Thanks...I WAS SO HIGH! 8/21/05

OK, everyone. I've caught up and read all the other posts here since I went to bed last night. Gotta say something:
Last night with this post, I was purely having fun. Yes, I expressed my opinion, but most of the time I was actually laughing out loud at what I was reading AND writing. Yes, I wrote things to provoke, but really, it was all in fun. Yes, I do think that WICKED gets bashed far more than any other show, for some reason. Take the title of this thread. I thought it was a great subject to list your favorite sad songs, but why, of all the songs in all the musicals out there, was Defying Gravity labeled "Obnoctious" or whatever. There was no need for that.
What if I started a thread with the subject "What's your favorite musical?? (Don't list Avenue Q!! No One cares about those damn puppets!!!) Why, it would be WW III around here.
So, since the door was opened, I had some fun. That's all. If I upset any of you, I'm sorry.
HAAAAAAAAA!!!! I can't say that!!! Really, if I upset any of you, get over it. It's just a few posts on a board.
Peace.

there's not masquerade(reprise) in POTO. do you mean 'why so silent' or 'all i ask of you (reprise)?

I don't really know if it's called the Masquerade (Reprise) but, it's at the end where the Music Box starts playing and he's singing along with it. "Christine, Christine". It might be I don't have the play list with me.

I wouldn't consider All the Wasted Time to be sad exactly, but Leo's Sh'ma could make anyone cry.

My list:
"For Good" Wicked. I know some of the lyrics are bad, but I truly love the song.
"I'll Cover You (reprise)" Rent. Brings me to tears every time.
"Close Every Door" Joseph... I just finished doing the show, and especially my show's Joseph made it extremely good.
"Empty Chairs and Empty Tables" Les Miz.
"Why" and "Louder than Words" Tick, Tick, Boom
"When I Look at You" Scarlet Pimpernell
"Some Other Time" On the Town - truly a sad song.
