To go back to the Wicked thing 1 last time (in this thread anyway), I certainly don't disagree that it has a right to be on Broadway. If it makes people happy and it's bringing money to the theatre industry, it's serving its purpose and belongs on the Great White Way as much as anything. Like a few people have said recently, we can't ignore the BUSINESS part of SHOW BUSINESS. Even with a show I despise (Boy From Oz being the only current one) if it's selling tickets and keeping theatre people employed, it's good for everyone.
My criticisms of shows come purely from an artistic, theoretical standpoint and I would never claim that one fan's opinion is more valid than anyone else's. Just understand that one of the ways to discredit your own opinion is to fly off the handle when it's challenged. Disagreements make life interesting and if everyone here just loved eveything on stage, well this board would be pretty damn boring. As it is, this is a fun place to chat and whine and debate and praise and kid around about things that very few people in the real world could appreciate, and we're lucky to have such a diverse community here. So NYBroadwayNY I hope you haven't taken any of this personally and realize that it's pretty much only like this when it comes to WICKED. It's not the worst show out there by any means. But with all of the new threads and members popping up daily to ask the same old WICKED/Idina/Cheno questions and try to convince us nay-sayers that we just "don't get" the deep meanings in the show, some of us have had waaaaaaay too much practice in indignantly arguing the CONS of the production. Many of us are born smart-asses, and most of us are prone to hyperbole. Hell, it's a theatre board! So we all wind up the thread villain at some point, it takes a lot more than that for anyone here to hold any kind of grudge.

Nothing Like You've Ever Known - Tell me on a Sunday
On My Own - Les Mis
Letting you Go - The first time I heard it was sung by Philip Quast on his CD 'Live at the Donmar' (and before the 'premier' recording by Lauren Kennedy!)
La Cava - sad and furiously angry, the CD doesn't do justice to the intensity that was on stage
Il Adore
Tell me it's not true - Blood Brothers

Oh Lord. Here we go again...
WICKED is a wonderful show and obviously, if it wasnt, it wouldnt be the biggest hit on Broadway and it wouldnt have been sold out for the past 4 months, straight, and it wouldnt have won Tonys, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards if it sucked.
AVENUE Q is obviously good too since it to has been faring well at the box office and it is a hit (kind of a sleeper hit for Broadway) and it did win three Tony awards.
I think that Nybroadwaystar had good points (and I must admit she made me laugh when she said the hairball thing). Wicked is just relentlessly bashed on this site. BlueWizard said that the Tonys were 2 months ago and to get over it. We (Wicked fans) have, or at least me. The Wicked-bashers havent gotten over it and continuosly make fun of it for losing the Tony to Avenue Q. IE: The title of this thread was just uncalled for. No one asked what you think about Defying Gravity. Its a great scene and I think (much like Phantom and the chandelier) it will be what will keep the show selling tickets years from now. And notice how the person who made the original post on this thread makes exceptions for Wicked with everything he does (ie: Best Musical Ever(no Wicked), Favorite sad song (no defying gravity). And yet, Avenue Q is allowed? Opinions should be taken into consideration, not bashed to death and followed up with rude comments. If someone likes Wicked, great! And ditto for Avenue Q.
We all just need to steer away from this situatuion and begin to talk about other things. If someone posts a Wicked question, and you dont like Wicked, dont waste a minute of your life to make a mean post about the show if it is uncalled for and same for Wicked fans and Avenue Q posts. If its that tempting to make a mean, uncalled for comment, then just dont even click on the Wicked threads. And Id just like to point out that many people said Wicked sucks on this thread, while no one said that about Avenue Q or anything mean like that at all.
That being said:
For Good
Im Not That Girl
Roses Turn
No One Is Alone
Seasons of Love
and there are a LOT more.

"Father to Son"
"Move On"
and people may think this is odd, but the very short reprise of "Adelaide's Lament" in ACT II is a heartbreaker....if done right....isn't that always the way?

Posted: 8/24/04 at 11:11amI think Downtown is some what sad, especially at the end when there talking about how they want to get out but they can't. However, I suppose I mostly just think it's a great song.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 11:51amO yeah, I forgot Adelaides 2nd Lament. It is very sad. I also forgot Im Not That Girl from Wicked. I also think Once Before I Go and Id Rather Leave While Im In Love are also sad (although they werent written for the theatre). Ti Moune from Once On This Island always brings tears to my eyes, as does "A Part of Us"

"Unusual Way" from Nine
"Momma Look Sharp" from 1776
"Somewhere That's Green" from Little Shop
"Something Wonderful" from The King and I
The last two are not "sad" in the usual sense, but they make me cry.
