While I haven't seen the show yet (and therefore can't really comment on the design) I thought i would post this pic of 'Shrek' that I came across today.
"He found something that he wanted, had always wanted and always would want— not to be admired, as he had feared; not to be loved, as he had made himself believe; but to be necessary to people, to be indispensable."

wicked_beast, you are so right. I'm actually wondering if Brian got the right musical? But I was at the Richard Rodgers this summer and I'm pretty sure that that's not what the inside of the theatre looks like.

If anyone's got some, I would LOVE to see some pictures of the set for "Sunset Boulevard." From what I've seen in the CD booklet, it was quite impressive.
And if anyone happens to have some good shot of the set(?) for "Carrie," those would be cool to see, too. Yeah, I've seen the video, but it's really dark and blurry.
Sorry to give an unoriginal answer, but I love the set in "The Lion King." It's really deceptively simple, but it's quite complex in a minimalistic, creative sort of way. Most notably, I love the stampede scene.

I think the Legally Blonde set is amazing. The Sorority house almost looks like is a back drop, then bam, the windows fly open. Also, just the sets in general, I find amazing.
I also really like the Beauty and The Beast, Wicked, Xanadu, Mary Poppins, and Little Mermaid one a lot.
An Inspector Calls (loved when the house collapsed...didn't see that coming)
Shrek (If only the music worked as well as the set...the set is not "spectacular" like YF or LK, but it works very well)...like a cross between Spamalot and Beauty and the Beast
Spring Awakening (the simplicity works)
Show Boat (revival)
Kiss of the Spider Woman (best use of projections until SITPWG)
Oliver (London)
Witches of Eastwick (London)
Hairspray
My list of worst sets: Cats, Starlight Express, Follies (revival), Woman in White (projections and moving walls were too distracting)
I am very much a fan of musicals, so maybe when I see a play the sets stand out more to me. Two that really impressed me were The Ritz, all those doors reaching to the sky, the depths of the hallways, I was in the front row and I was amazed.
When people talk about his set, they usually refer to the barricade or the turntable. However, I absolutely love the main set--the grey, brick walls, and scattered windows. It's ugly, but at the same time, I think it's beautiful. The overhanging wall upstage, framed by the cylindrical brick walls and supporting, wooden beams. I LOVE IT!!
(Btw, how do you post a pic on this forum??? I tried both the HTML and forum code and it doesn't work!! I have a really cool pic to share. I use Photobucket, btw.)

Maria Bjornson's work on The Phantom of the Opera deserves every award and accolade it has received. Absolutely brilliant designs. (Photos below are from the Copenhagen production, reopening from January-May 2009...http://www.detnyteater.dk/flora/flora.asp?page=13502)
