Female Bobbie in the US?

If the current London Production were to cross the pond, who would you like to see as Bobbie?

Some thoughts from me would be Laura Benanti, Jessie Mueller, Lindsay Mendez or Patina Miller.

I’d rather Sondheim write an original piece about a single woman in New York and not just rewrite Company because some director thinks they know better than Sondheim and Prince at the top of their game.

This is an unfair portrayal of Elliott given that Sondheim gave Marianne Elliott his blessing after seeing video of her workshopped piece and has since done rewrites for her.

I would actually just love to see Rosalie Craig, who has been involved with this production since the first workshop, reprise her role in New York.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

The production was conceived with Craig in mind and she also has a long history with Elliott. If this transfers, I have a hard time imaging Craig wouldn't transfer too.

But Rosalie Craig is fab, so if it transfers I hope she comes with it. Her Mother was one of the only good parts of the horrible Regents Park RAGTIME a few years back.

I'm guessing if the production transfers, Craig will come to since she's been apart of it since the beginning. But if they are looking for an American, I think Jenn Colella would be fantastic.

I'd rather see a new musical about a single woman as well,but let's not pretend this is about the director "thinking they know better"than Sondheim. It's an alternative way of doing it, not "better." And revisals of old shows are hardly unheard of.

I didn't necessarily mean this production. I was speaking more hypothetically about what female actresses do people think would be great as Bobbie. But I agree, if it were to transfer there's no way Craig wouldn't come along with it.

I have felt that, for the longest time, Company, although a fantastic show is a period piece. Great though may be, but, it's dated. When the show originated, the societal norms were that, if you were 35 and not married, then that was a bit out of the norm for that time period. Now, if you're 35 and still single, it's not that big a deal.

Don't get me wrong, I personally think that Company is my favorite Sondheim musical. However, I am not sure what this revival was trying to say by having a woman playing Bobbi. I love the idea, but, for me, it's just well...there. It's still a period piece.

To be honest, in the 21st century Company makes more sense for an attractive woman to play the role for me - at least based on my observations of how dating works for them. They have so much power over men they can get anyone they want at the drop of a finger - especially for casual flings. And reaching early mid 30s definitely comes a time where people do think about settling down.

Laura Benanti would be near the top of the list for me. Sutton Foster? No thank you.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

I think the biggest argument Marianne Elliott made for doing this gender swapped COMPANY is that in casting a 35 year old woman as Bobby, the issues that make the show arguably dated and or a period piece suddenly seem relevant and timely

If you are a 35 year old man who is single, as you say, its not a big deal.

For a 35 year old woman to be unmarried, the stakes are a lot higher in terms of societal pressure.

This is absolutely true today. So I'm intrigued to see how this plays out.

I'm not convinced that Rosalie Craig would necessarily transfer if this came to the states; but of course we have to wait and first see how the production is received.

For theorizing fun. Of those other names suggested, I could definitely see Sutton Foster or Laura Benanti playing the role. I have a harder time imagining Jenn Collela who is pretty tough as nails.

I’d love to live somewhere where women have ANY power over men. Where is this place?
