EW has a first listen of the new cast recording of Once on this Island, however it doesn't seem to be working for me. It's a shame, because I'm extremely excited for this one.

I can't get it to work, either. It's almost as if they didn't upload the tracks but just created the article.
I hope it works soon because I'm excited for this album as well!!

I don't love the score, but I will absolutely be buying Alex Newell's "Mama Will Provide." It's one of the most thrilling Broadway vocal performances in a long time.

The playlist must have been made private, I can't access it on SoundCloud anymore.
EW's site doesn't work either yet.
UPDATE: IT WORKS NOW!!!!!!
INCREDIBLE!!!

It's incredible so far.
Only let down for me is Darrington. Norm Lewis's "Rain" was so much more powerful.

Just finished my first listen. My thoughts:
I wish that Norm Lewis was in this recording instead of Quentin Earl Darrington; Norm was incredible.
Alex Newell is INCREDIBLE in Mama Will Provide, but the melodica (or is it an accordion?) grabs my attention in this song.
In the OBCR, the recording included an amazing moment where everybody is talking about Ti Moune after being told that
I wish they included this moment in the new cast recording.

Posted: 2/21/18 at 12:39pmIt sounds incredible and those new orchestrations are just so colorful. I just wish they had opted for two CDs and recorded the full show, dialogue and all because some of the underscoring is really beautiful. Overall though, it's a great album.

I love everything about this show and have been listening all day... the music sounds great, but is some of the balance off for anyone else? (I.e. in the beginning of "We Dance," the first "please Agwe, don't flood my garden" seems less sharp/clear than the other lines in that segment.) I'm going to assume that this is SoundCloud and/or my ear buds and/or the fact that I'm listening at work with people talking around me, and that it'll be great in the real thing that's released on Friday... but just curious if anyone else is noticing this? There were a couple of other spots that I felt like the balance was weirdly off. (Like, in the same song, the grands hommes singing "how fine our clothes are/how fast we drive/we dance at parties..." - is that meant to be "distant"? I don't remember that choice in the actual show.)
Not that this will prevent me from listening to it at all, haha. Still my favorite production in a long time.

Jamming to this all day. Sounds exactly like it did when I was in the theater. The one thing? I really wish Norm Lewis was just cast as Agwe because I would have another recording of his gorgeous voice. Wonderful job on this recording though to anyone involved!

I agree Norm Lewis seemed a bit stronger than what I hear on this recording. Is it me or is Tamyra Gray a little bit more intense/darker in "Forever Yours" (Reprise) than the person on this recording? Maybe it was different in person.

The Human Heart has always been a favorite broadway song of mine for as long as I can remember.... I can’t believe how this production elevated the song even more - to such an ethereal place that only the great Lea Salonga can deliver. I believe it wasn’t a stretch for this legendary actress to play Erzulie.... with her heavenly voice - she IS a goddess.

Token grumpy-pants post for this thread: I wasn't blown away by the album. The cast sounds good, but I was hoping the new orchestrations would be more different, in an interesting way, compared to the originals. And it seems a little weird to me that the last part of the climactic Ti Moune's Choice scene wasn't recorded, as it was for the previous albums. I mentioned in the previews thread that I have reservations about how that scene ends, but like it or hate it, it's a pretty vital moment in the show as written.
