I thought THOU SHALT NOT was amazing....I was also lucky enough to catch Rachelle Rak go on as Therese she was phenominal.
Bierko was so incredible and obviously Norbert Leo Butz stole the show....Debra Monk should've won a Tony for her performance.
I think the book was really interesting and dark......the music was gorgeous.
Tug Boat, Ain't That Sweet, The Other Hours, Sovreign Lover.....I just really enjoyed it. Very dark, very sexy a great love story.
PARADE!
Beautiful, wonderful moving production.
Wasn't a flop by any means other than finances.
All Shook Up. Did it have some deep thoughtful symbolic meaning? No. But was it fun? YES YES YES! I never stoped smiling. There wasn't one person in that theatre that wasn't having fun.
I second Superman!
and I'm going to say again, my new fave: Human Comedyyyyyyyy!

If "Lestat" and the other vampire musicals were to have "one more day in the sun", wouldn't that kill them off for good since legend says they can't be exposed to the sun? If so, I vote for "Lestat" (which will be a quick flop), and "Dance of the Vampires (which was a quick flop)"
Oh Brother! really rocks... that show deserves to be more well- known
If anyone is looking for a fun, interesting, great CD, try the Oh, Brother! recording

WithoutaTrace, you are such a flop master! I love it! I'm curious- have you actually heard Raggedy Ann? Is there a recording I don't know of?

"The Beautiful Game". ALW is still paying for the faustian bargain he made early in his career. It is absolutely astonishing that this musical was never given room to breathe when "Starlight Express" is still drawing audiences somewhere.
There was so much good music and exciting choreography. "God's Own Country" put a lump in my throat the first time I heard it. I can only imagine its impact on some Irish theatergoers. Check out the song at Amazon.
Unfortunately, I have never heard Raggedy Ann...there is no recording. I would do almost anything to hear the score. I recently bought the playbill on ebay. Raggedy Ann is my latest obsession.

Once you actually hear some of those shows, you will no longer think they deserve one day in the sun. Especially RAGGEDY ANN...
My friend Walter, who saw the show, said Rag Dolly (the final number in Act 1) was the only good song in the show.
A couple of the songs were nice - mostly the ones that were recycled from that animated movie, but you have to remember that the show was like a wierd metaphor for American/Soviet relations at the time - its' really dull and bizarre - especially for a family show.
Michael Bennett, did you get to see the show???
Random question but, does anyone know if there was ever a successful musical at the Nederlander before Rent? I'm not sure there was...
I don't know if this counts...but Seussical always has seemed synonomous with 'flop' and destined to be a musical for high schools. I know its not quite Broadway...caliber, but the music is really really good and I think it deserves a little more recognition.
WOW. I checked all the way back to 1950, and until Rent, there had NEVER been a musical that had played more than 80 performances at the Nederlander!!! Out of at least 20 musicals, most of them played a single digit number of performances!
Rent broke the Nederlander curse!
Taboo
The Woman in White
All Shook Up
Dracula
I've heard an audio recording of RAGGEDY ANN from Broadway. Not pretty...
LENA HORNE: THE LADY AND HER MUSIC, though not a traditional Broadway musical was a huge hit at the Nederlander. I think before RENT, the theatre was mostly used for concert type performances like this. It was kind of a last resort theatre so most of the book shows that went there were pretty low rent (no pun intended).
Dance of the Vampires
Dracula (i think more people would come see it with kelli o'hara now that she's made a bigger name for herself...though i don't think she'd ever get involved in it again. it's not like she'll have the chance...)
The Woman in White
