Flying Over Sunset - Prioritize on Trip?

Hi there,

A totally trivial request for advice – I was scheduled to see FLYING OVER SUNSET in a few weeks on a quick weekend trip, but with the news today, that clearly can't happen.

I'm going to be in NY this weekend and have tickets for MUSIC MAN, TROUBLE IN MIND, and COMPANY. Is there anyone who feels like I should swap one of those three for SUNSET and catch the replaced one (only MUSIC MAN and COMPANY possible due to TIM's closing this weekend) in a few weeks when I was set to see SUNSET? I know the reviews/response have been far from stellar, but I'm still so intrigued by the show's premise and package. I also don't want to risk a sudden closure of MUSIC MAN or COMPANY or not get to experience them with their full casts, which both seem promising to be on this weekend.

Any advice...? Thank you in advance!

If you are interested in Sunset, I would definitely recommend seeing it here. It's highly unlikely that it will tour and with the mixed reviews and short run, I also find it unlikely that we'll see it popping up in a lot of regional houses. So this is really your chance to see this show. We of course can't predict the future, but Company and Music Man have been selling well enough I don't think they're in immediate danger of closing. Although you do of course always take that risk, so if you absolutely cannot live without seeing those two, you may still want to stick with them.

Of all the shows you're considering, I would place Company as priority #1. With the brilliance happening at the Jacobs right now, you definitely don't want to risk any potential cast changes over the spring or summer.

If you can get comparable seats for the same price for The Music Man, I'd consider waiting a few weeks to see it, since they've had so few previews so far. Since Hugh and Sutton have both gotten COVID out of the way, you shouldn't have to worry about them being out of the show again before it opens. I've noticed that availability dwindles in the coming weeks, so I don't know if it'll be possible to swap.

I would replace Company to see FOS. I found it to be utterly remarkable and think you should definitely see it. Company will definitely be around through Spring/Summer and I doubt any leads will leave pre-Tonys.

I agree to replace Company with FOS. I doubt Company will close anytime soon and ticket prices for Company have been Bway average when compared to Music Man.

The only reason I would hesitate to replace Company is that, as of today's matinee, the only cast member out was Terence Archie, and I believe Claybourne Elder is the only one so far to contract COVID. Obviously, anything can happen before the weekend, but I would rather go ASAP, instead of waiting a few weeks and running the risk of either of the leads or one of the more featured actors in the cast testing positive and being out for 10 days. Of course, as I said in my earlier post, the choice hinges on being able to get tickets for The Music Man in a few weeks, which will likely be difficult right now. However, there's a good chance there will be more seats released and returned.

I would keep your whole schedule as is and just keep F.O.S as a backup in case any of them end up cancelled (though really you should go see Caroline or Change instead as a backup)

Flying Over Sunset is a big misfire a big misfire but that does not mean you should not see it. You already have a good idea of what all those other shows are-even without seeing them. It is similar  to missing the original production of Merrily We Roll Along without the great score. The show does not work, it is emotionally unsatisfying, but that does not mean you should not see it.

If you can push back Music Man I would do that. I really enjoyed Flying Over Sunsets and especially the performances by Carmen (and I've heard Tony but he was out the day I saw it) are very much worth seeing. Company is fantastic and I wouldn't put off seeing it just because you never know what will happen.

Flew in for a long weekend trip today, saw Flying Over Sunset tonight and am very glad I did. I have tix for Music Man and Company on my next trip in April and feel confident they’ll both be around (and hopefully with more predictability by then), but I agree with those saying this will be your one chance to see FOS. It’s far from perfect, and I agree with some of the criticisms on this board and in the reviews, but at the same time there are several moments that moved me deeply and that I know will stay with me for a long time. And the performances, most notably Cusack’s (Hadden-Paton was out tonight), are outstanding.
