Posted: 2/22/11 at 8:27pmIs this a strong contender for BEST PLAY? What are the thoughts of those people who have seen it?
GOOD PEOPLE extends#2
Posted: 2/22/11 at 9:07pmI mean, it could be. But, it has WAR HORSE to contend with. And WAR HORSE is apparently stunning.

Posted: 2/22/11 at 9:11pmWar Horse is a terrible play. It's visually stunning, but it has no substance at all. Look for the big battle to be between Bengal Tiger and Jerusalem.

Posted: 2/22/11 at 9:22pmOh right, I forgot about WAR HORSE the word of mouth from London has been so strong that maybe the one to beat, however, you never know I guess. ENRON was also the can't miss play to beat last spring and just didn't translate. I guess JERUSALEM could hold the same fate. I imagine you can never quite judge if something will play well in both London and NYC.

True, true. I think BENGAL TIGER and JERUSALEM have superior writing (and actor power to spare) but WAR HORSE might pull through on sheer scope/beauty of production.
And, N&C, WAR HORSE, thematically, is supposed to be pretty heartwarming, much easier to stomach than ENRON.

Posted: 2/23/11 at 12:07amI enjoyed it, but I would say that it won't really be a contender. It might get nominated, but it won't be a contender for the win.

looking forward to seeing this.
i bet it gets extended again too

I'm going to guess that there is a reason that it only extended by two weeks -- McDormand's schedule perhaps? Commitment of the physical space?
As far as Tony contender? Nomination likely, but it's not fabulous or ground breaking.

Posted: 2/24/11 at 12:17amIt's a fantastic play, but very small-scale and character driven, and just, well... "small." Which isn't a problem by any means (quite the contrary), but it might result in people's reactions being a bit more muted. I think it's a terrifically written show about the class divide that never condescends to its characters or its audience; it's quite funny, and terribly moving, so I hope it's a strong contender for Best Play, but I worry reaction will be more along the lines of unanimous "very good" and "solid" than people unequivocally saying "great." Either way, I've been recommending it to everyone I know.

Posted: 2/27/11 at 5:49pmI saw it, and I thought it had some terrific writing and performances. I wish it could extend through the summer or something. I think it could really find an audience. Such a great cast. At my performance the audience was very audibly involved. It just pulls you in and you really get wrapped up in the story. I didn't care for the design of it. I wish they had used the space more, and the last scene seemed a little weak to me, considering the huge, monumental scene that proceeds it.

Posted: 2/27/11 at 5:56pmInteresting. I found the last scene to fit perfectly with the theme of the play and who these characters, especially McDormand were. *SPOILER* Nothing really changed in her life, it's going to be another day for her and another day of hoping things get better. It was a very real and honest ending, I thought.

SPOILER
Oh, no. I totally get the thematic idea, etc. But compared to that last pivotal scene, it was just sort of...eh..It introduced some other character elements that weren't touch on prior. Like that Stevie might have a thing for her, or the fact that the child might be his after all. I don't know, maybe I just expected a bigger ending. I kind of wish it had just ended with her leaving their house.

Completely enjoyed this show on Friday....but...Is there always distracting noise from the neighboring theatre?

I don't think it will the Tony because of the high-profile transfers coming, but it is a really well-crafted, remarkable and an important play.
McDormand is a triumph, and I think will be a strong contender for the Tony.

I agree that McDormand will be a contender. As for the last scene...
SPOILER
I loved that it hinted at him actually being the father, especially after the argument in the house about how they thought she would have been a bad mother if the child was his and she didn't tell him before. Not only did I love that it hinted that, I loved that it was only hinted at and not made a big deal. It was so small that if you were distracted for a second you would have missed it and the play would have been something completely different for you.

I disagree. I don't think it was a "hint" at all. I think it was made pretty clear that he was the father.
In my opinion, the only thing that would make the production stronger, is if the wife "turns the tables" facing the audience. When she suddenly decides that she's lying, she's facing upstage at the fireplace and so, her change in opinion is a bit... out-of-nowhere. (Don't think it's Lindsay-Abaire's fault, but Sullivan's...)

Yeah that bit seemed a little muddy. She sort of switched sides quickly.
I think it's a very well-written show. It's just the last scene seems a little small compared to what came before it. And also the way they do the scene changes - to me - just stopped the momentum. They were quick sure, but it seemed a little more like a movie and not a theatrical production. I wish they would have floated on different pieces of the next set as they were finishing the prior one, or did something artistic like that.

Posted: 2/28/11 at 12:17pmSorry, "hint" was a bad word for me. I too feel like it was made obvious, I just meant that they didn't make a big deal out of it, it was just kind of mentioned in passing almost.

Yeah, which I liked as well.
Oh well. It would be great if it could be moved to another house, etc. I think it could really find an audience, but oh well.

I think it has a great shot. It's an American play by a well-respected playwright and is a very well done piece. I really loved it. (I tend to think it's a Pulitzer contender.) I like it because it is done simply yet says so much and manages to do it without bells and whistles. It's very thought-provoking. (I think Frances McDormand will win Best Actress.)
I don't know. I just think it has a good chance. It was very well-received and is a strong possibility for regional/touring productions.

Definitely a nomination and McDormand is a lock for a nomination as well.
This was the first play I enjoyed listening to, if that makes any sense, in a while. Great dialogue and the performances are pretty much all rock solid.
