All the shows that is closing the 4th are in red.
I believe I've said this before, but if the ONLY good thing you can say about a show is "it's providing employment for many people!", then good riddance! I firmly believe the inhabitants of this board get FAR more upset about forthcoming unemployment than those involved with a soon-to-close show; they may be sad, but they know that's how it works, and they move onto the next job, whereas people on the internet choose to sit around and wail "oh nooo how can you EVER wish unemployment on these people? D:".
Think of it this way; we're not wishing unemployment on those involved in 'Grease' (srsly, it's the stupidest thing anyone can say about a show closing, and it strikes me as more and more stupid every time I read it), we're wishing better employment in fantastic new opportunities for them. :P
EDIT: uh, despite dissing the "don't wish unemployment on people!" arguments, I do agree that sometimes people are WAY too gleeful about these things.
8 shows.
that's a lot of empty houses. reality bites but the economy sucks right now. we're in a major recession and people are not going to easily fork over $100 for a theater ticket. the show better be the equivalent of the 'second coming' for those kind of ticket prices.
RoxieRose4, where did you find that chart? I really like it.
Wikipedia, I did the coloring.
Well, it's official: The economy's really in the crapper.
Tourists may not want to spend what's left of their paychecks on tickets to see a musical about writing a musical or some show about horny teenagers gettin' it on in 1890s Germany, but they will always want to see Grease. Always. GREASE IS RECESSION-PROOF.
Well, it was, anyway...
Another one Bites the dust!
Considering that this show had been running well, this is the first closing that really makes me say, "Um, maybe there is something to be worried about."

it got a boost the week of thanksgiving, but i think its grosses for the 2-3 weeks before that were below its nut. there's a very informed analysis on the grease forums which indicate that its probably been skimming its nut for awhile, now.

However, what could play here? Really, what? Maybe Dirty Dancing, or maybe Brigadoon (Though I have high doubts). I think, literally, many theatres will be emtpy for a while...

You must have had a miserable year. Guess I should be glad about that.
yes KathyGriffinLovesYou now you can actually get a good night's sleep for the first time this year.
"I now have a personal reason to hate George Bush, AHHHH! You don't know how mad this makes me, I had a plan to audition for Grease, now I can't do it. OMG, OMG"
Sorry, I couldn't resist the chance to parody that youtube video where that girl went crazy over Spring Awakening closing, LOL.

I'm not a big fan of Grease in general but I'm sort of glad this production is going. It really was horrid. Hopefully a better show will replace it.

Not a fan of this show AT ALL....any production of it really; but I have to admit, this has shaken me in the sense that there are just TOO, TOO many jumping ship. And I'm fearing that we haven't heard the end of it for January closings.
This is even worse than i feared it will be...and I'm a fairly pessimistic person!
It's sad so many shows are closing, but I hope the cast and crew will the get the opportunity to work on much better shows.
so with this annoucement & Boeing, Boeing's annoucement yesterday, the amount of theaters that are known to be empty for a long time are:
Brooks Atkinson, Belasco, Circle in the Square, Hilton, Jacobs, Longacre, Eugene O'Neil, Neil Simon, St. James, Walter Kerr. A total of 10 theaters that; once their current production closes; they have no new production currently booked.
Fela! might take the O'Neil. And until the Fall; Nerds: The Musical is looking at the Walter Kerr; Dirty Dancing at the Neil Simon & Spiderman: The Musical is looking at the Hilton. Still, there will be way too many theaters going empty for much too long.
I'm in shock over IN THE HEIGHTS closing too! Boo.

I realize that this show is a piece of steaming crap, however at this point I don't think anyone on this board should be applauding the closing of any shows. This is a scary time for the industry.
If things were going well I would be on the "shame on you for wishing people out of a job" bandwagon, but now its gone beyond that. At this point, sad as it is, we need to really be hoping that anything on Broadway or coming to Broadway, regardless of quality, has a nice long run. If things don't start turning around fast Broadway is going to go into deep hibernation for a while.
If Broadway dries up for a period of time, all of us here will run out of stuff to gossip and bitch about, and I have a feeling that some people here wouldn't know what to do with themselves if that were to happen, so go out and support the good stuff, and (for now) the crap like Grease.

I, as some of you may know, am a huge Grease fan and will be very sad to see it go. Was it the best show on Broadway, no, but it was fun and hip and I really enjoyed it.
But, whoever said it, said it right. Grease is supposed to be recession-proof, and the fact that it's not is a sign of how bad it really is. I suppose I am more disappointed by the fact I am not excited for anything else to open, except WSS of course. Sorry, but Spiderman and The Adams Family won't do it for me.
Well, there is a month left - I plan to enjoy it!

Wow. Where to begin. This is directed to all of you haters out there. Again, Avenue Q is NOT CLOSING, and has posted no notice to the contrary. Rumor mongers abound, keep wishing if you must. Second, all of you people who are "happy" that Grease is closing, you wouldn't feel the same if you or someone you know was in the show. That argument of actors being in this field of "instability" is nonsense. Every field is a gamble you dumbass. Broadway is no different. And third, there aren't many new shows coming to Broadway besides Vanities, West Side Story, Nine to Five, and Guys and Dolls. Most of which have been cast already, some of which have reduced their cast numbers due to the economy. After that, others may close. Why don't you people realize its bad for ANY shows to close, especially now with what's going on in the world. Broadway is one of the few things left that represent a true American art form. Even shows that you don't care for, still put people to work, and as long as there is a demand, they will play. No one thinks Mamma Mia is a good musical, but people love it, so its wonderful those actors have a job. I'm just amazed anyone would be glad a show closes because they dislike it. It's not about you or your opinion. Think of the greater good, specifically people who chose this career to entertain such unappreciative and opinionated cows such as yourselves. Hope that karma train works out for you.

IN THE HEIGHTS isn't closing...
No one is ever happy when the individuals are hurt, ie. out of work. No one here has bashed an individual or wished any person ill will. No one is laughing in the faces of those that will be unemployed.
When people express that they are "glad" a show is closing it is SIMPLY a reflection of their feelings on the production's worth. PERIOD. And personally, I would rather have a dark house than feed the public drek and still call it quality just because it is on B'way.
BUT IT IS A BUSINESS....and the actor's know that the possibility of their show closing is ALWAYS "out there". They are fully aware of how the house is selling and should never be shocked by the news.
As others have said: JUST to keep actors employed is NOT a reason to keep a show open. Does it suck for them? Of course it does and no one is denying that. In hard times, MANY people suffer, actors are certainly NOT exempt from that.
