Found an old thread on Buckley. Apparently Sondheim told Laurents he was wrong for how he treated Buckley backstage, although he also did not like the production.
The original Musto article link is dead, but Musto does post here, so maybe he can refresh us.
I can't imagine Buckley being bad - in anything. I really can't. I knew of a few people at the time who were able to get tickets to Buckley's performance, and said it was fantastic - "just wait till she brought it to Broadway" I was told. (I mean. it was inevitable she would bring it to Broadway). And it never happened.
I saw the Imelda Staunton performance on PBS, and all I could say to myself was "God, this is awful!" I FF through most of it (as I DVRd it). The whole cast was horrible - looked like a high school performance.
Then I read it was moving to Broadway in the Spring of 2018. (NY City Theater website has it listed for February 1). Does anyone know the state of this musical? Is it still coming early next year?
Betty Buckley was easily the best sung Rose I've ever heard, but her vision of the character was odd to say the least. I don't think she landed even one laugh the entire night. Very serious and kinda depressed. She just wasn't much fun. It was an interesting and potentially valid approach, but it made for a long evening. Still, that voice...it at least deserved a cast recording.
I haven't heard much about the Staunton version coming to Broadway recently. I can't imagine why they'd want to. The DVD/Blu-Ray is readily available of the BBC version and I can't imagine any Gypsy fans dying to see that same performance or production on stage for Broadway prices. Better to wait a few more years and get a whole new production together.
Agree. Lately it seems like we've had an awful lot of revivals of both GYPSY and LES MIZ, no? I always heard revivals usually waited a minimum of 15 years...like the original GYPSY (1959), Lansbury (1974) and Daly (1989).
Peters was a year too early (2003) so I won't knock her, and then Lupone in 2008? Now possibly another one in 2018? Too soon.
I completely disagree. Shows should be revivable whenever a new production is warranted. There are TONS of amazing actresses I'd be excited to see play Madam Rose so I'll gladly see all of them. I'm not saying it'l commercially viable, but if we can revive Macbeth 4 times in a two year period, why not a Gypsy every 5 years?

So when is it determined a new production is warranted? Yes, there are many actresses we all would love to play Mama Rose, but does that mean it's time to revive once again?
I saw Imelda live in 2015 and she was amazing to me- and everyone in the theatre stopped breathing during "Rose's Turn." I don't think the BBC performance was close to experiencing it live.
Also, this : for Tyne lovers- and she is great even watched this way..
Imelda was so insanely over the top, I’ll never be able to watch that filmed version of the show. HOWEVER, I thought her performance at the concert was fantastic. She scaled it back to a level of normalcy that I didn’t know she was capable of doing on stage. Hopefully she can keep that up when I see her in “Hello Dolly” next year.
Well, we disagree on Imelda's performance at the Savoy, I only wish I could be in London to see her in Hello Dolly!
If it gets good feedback, and transfers to New York (I haven't been there for years and years), I would consider saving a ridiculous amount of money to to. I got day seats for one performance of Gypsy. That's what I love about London theatre!
