I remember asking this in another thread but cannot find it!
Does anyone know if you can actually walk up to box offices and ask for a Playbill? I'm going into the city tomorrow (5/25) and want to collect some Playbills, and I thought I read that you can do this...but I didn't want to make an idiot of myself if you really can't.
What shows have people done this for?

I've had very good luck in getting Playbills from the box office, however, there have been a few times they havent had any.

I know that Yankee has mentioned that he did it before. I did it for Beauty and the Beast a while back.

I remember now that I got a Tarzan Playbill from the box office....if that helps any.
...just see the show.

Oh Munk, always ready to lend his helpful advice as usual
I'm just saying.
And then we say, "Why are box office people so miserable?"
Thanks! If possible, I want to get ones from the following shows:
110 in the Shade
Avenue Q
Chicago
Company
Hairspray
Jersey Boys
Legally Blonde
Les Miserables
LoveMusik
Rent
Tarzan
Spelling Bee
Wicked
Color Purple
Pirate Queen
Also A Chorus Line, but I'm seeing that in July, so I might pass on that one.

I think you mistake their look of misery with their impending fear that they might get another blaring "Do you have student rush?!" delivered to them.
Munk, if I had the money to see all these shows, I would, believe me.
I also can say that I am interested in seeing the show (which is true for some of the shows on my list), and if they have an extra Playbill that I can have so I could see who is in the cast, etc. etc.

Millie- Are you seeing any shows tomorrow?
Unfortunately, no.
I am taking a train from CT, and do not want to come home really late. Since the shows I want to see get out at around 10:30, the earliest train I am able to catch is 11:22, meaning that I won't be home till around 1 am. And walking at the train station in my area late at night is kind of sketchy.

What's the point of having a Playbill if you didn't see the show?
As a collector.
Playbills mean different things to different people. I know where Millie is coming from.
Because I want to add them to my collection, since it's practically impossible for me to see every show that I want to see...?
I was just saying I could use it as an excuse at the box office. Besides, if I was really a tourist interested in buying tickets at that moment, where would I get a computer to look up the cast list?

They're fun to have if you later see someone in that Playbill actually in a show. :) Or you could put them on eBay.
Or you could be like me and regret that you sold your Annie revival playbill (a production I never saw) well before Sutton Foster made it big. D'oh.

Umm...the cast list is posted on the wall in what I'm guessing is every theatre...right in front of the box office....
I looove Playbills :P
I have updated my collection with Cats and Aida and I will get 2 more this weekend after I watch Wicked and Spelling Bee.
I only collect playbills from the shows that I actually have been to.
If the box office doesn't have any when you ask, you can always just dart into the theatre after the show while everyone is leaving and take one from the stacks at the back of the house. I did that a few times.

I should have clarified, what if I wanted the bios too? Some tourists might be interested in the previous credits of a cast or crew member before deciding to see a show, and they don't post that information under the cast list boards. I should've clarified that in my previous post.

Heh. I still have mine - and a few extras.

Just ask the various box offices if they have any copies of the Playbill.
Don't expect them to be nice about it, expect them to throw it at you if they do. Good luck.
This issue is clouded by the sense that extra playbills plus cast signatures at the stage door = E-bay.
Hey antonijan , nice wall! Are those 8x10 frames, and do you have to get your mats specialty cut or is there somewhere that actually sells a Playbill-size mat?
I would just come up with a story to cover yourself.
I assume you're young, so just say "I'm considering organizing a trip for my school and would like a playbill to bring back with me." They'd be happy to oblige.
