I know I might get shot for saying this here, but I'm a gleek, a compulsive one. I thought the song choice was absolutely perfect, and freakishly appropriate for Emma's character. These are all very talented people who have legit voices and are introducing our generation to MT classics which, like it or not, wouldn't happen if it weren't for the show. Personally I'm obsessed with theatre and company is one of my favorite shows, but we have to understand that we are the minority of the population and if we want these classics to survive and remain classics we have to find ways for people outside our community to discover them. This morning I was beyond thrilled when my hip hop loving friend told me how much she loved that number.

You know, when Glee started, I thought, "This would be a great way to introduce young people to classic music theatre."

And then they would touch upon those songs... y'know... once in a while. Maybe. Enough to fill one track on every other album.

Glee is not "introducing our generation to MT classics". It's riding the coattails of successful pop artists by covering THEIR songs- and, once in a while, they'll throw something in there for the kids in their high school Thespian troupe.

They missed a really good opportunity on this episode. Kurt and Tina should have performed "I Still Believe" from Miss Saigon.

Blaine what's haunting you?

Yes! Thank you! And when they do throw in an MT song, it's usually one that people already know.

What I don't get is that the internet seems to exist to complain about each and every detail about Smash, and yet Glee is still going strong like it was ever good or ever made sense.

'Still having nightmares from Kurt singing Rose's Turn, I would say "Glee, get your paws off of Sondheim altogether."

Yeah poor Chris Colfer. He was only nominated for an Emmy and won a Golden Globe for that episode. Christ, are there any more insufferable than Sondheimites. At least HenryTDobson and all that jazz, get it.

Phyliss Rogers Stone - I hear you, don't get it either. SMASH musical performances are so much better and they have more talent. IMO - Lea Michelle can't come close to Megan Hilty in voice or talent. People love to knock Katherine McPhee but she is better than practically anything "Glee" has to offer. SMASH gets blasted here about not being totally realistic but yet GLEE has people in their mid to late 20's playing teenagers. People hated certain SMASH charcters yet GLEE has inane ones like Sue and Emma. Heck, they even turned Will's character into a sap/idiot. IMO - the show "Bombshell" is actually pretty good and theater geeks should watch SMASH instead of GLEE if they want a TV series about Broadway.

Well in order to reach the teenage audience they can't turn the show into a weekly Sondheim revue. While some of the broadway songs they perform may seem overdone to us, the fact of the matter is that the majority of population doesn't know them. They don't know who Sondheim is and had never even heard of Company. I also looooove Smash but you people have to realize Glee was the original and without Glee there probably wouldn't be any Smash. And I'm tired of people trashing Lea, Chris and the rest of the cast. They can act, they can sing rings around other pop stars, they're passionate about the musical theatre repertoire and two of them were Broadway stars before doing the show.

Please explain to me why all the hate because honestly I don't get it.

"Please explain to me why all the hate because honestly I don't get it."

Because the idea and the pilot were so promising, but they realized they could profit off the music so they followed the itunes sales trends and it became that much less what the original fans wanted it to be.

All That Jazz - IMO- GLEE has lost the original concept of the show which was about a HS Glee club. I guess they knew that ratings would be horrible if they did not keep the original cast in the storyline. I also think have people in their mid to late twenties potraying teenagers is pretty dumb. As for the cast of GLEE, they not bad but I think SMASH has more talented singers/dancers/actors.

I think people complain about Glee more than they complain about Smash, actually. Television Without Pity has about 20 pages for each episode of Glee, and most of them are frustrated or critical.

Well in order to reach the teenage audience they can't turn the show into a weekly Sondheim revue.

I'm not saying Sondheim, I'm saying like Jason Robert Brown, Frank Wildhorn, LaChiusa, Lippa, maybe Adam Guettel's more accessible stuff, things that would maybe appeal to teenagers. I actually discovered a lot of popular music thanks to Glee, so I don't know why it can't be the same for people and musical theatre.

But IMO the creatives at Glee have demonstrated that they know very little about musical theatre. They didn't even seem to know a lot about West Side Story aside from the movie.

They're not trying to appeal to a teenage audience, they're trying to appeal to wallets. It didn't take them very long to make sure that three of last summer's biggest singles were featured on the show. And that's generally how it goes- a big hit single, four, five months go by- it's being autotuned on Glee and released for purchase.

People hate the show because it has terrible character continuity, it's blatantly just trying to sell records at this point, it can't juggle all the tones it wants to have, and because all it does is pander.

"He was only nominated for an Emmy and won a Golden Globe for that episode. Christ, are there any more insufferable than Sondheimites."

First of all, I am not a Sondheimite. Some of his music is true art and some of it isn't. IMO, Passion sucks big time.

There's a reason why the song is called "Rose's Turn". It is a song about a mother having a mental breakdown and trying to figure out why she ended up alone and unsuccessful after working so hard for many years. Had Sondheim wished to write a song about a gay teenager with only sixteen years of life experience having a bad day he would have called it "Kurt's Turn."

Unfortunately Sondheim allows his work to be bastardized all over the place, which is a shame on him. Below is an example from the Glee episode where they just did whatever they felt like with the song. If you will notice, the replaced lyrics don't scan properly.

Where would you be
Miss Gypsy Rose Lee

Where would you be
Miss Rachel Bare-REE

See? It doesn't even scan correctly.

It doesn't matter how many awards Colfer wins, if a person isn't being true to the intentions of the material, then don't perform it.

Glee was a never meant to be a broadway themed show it is a musical series which utilizes the broadway musical storytelling through musical numbers which are mainly pop and occasional show tunes. When I started watching glee I didn't expected for them to do broadway songs I expected a new musical series, the show tunes then became an added bonus. As I kept watching those became the songs I looked forward to most, specially when Rachel or Kurt sang their massive ballads.

In regards to the storyline, the original concept was great and it still is, but the creative team knew that us hardcore Gleeks couldn't stand the thought of loosing Lea and Chris. So to me the NYC storyline was just pure genius. Not only can we enjoy the new glee-clubers while still delighting ourselves with the originals, but it also expands the audience so the fans who started watching when they were in High School can transition along with the show. It also allows for the show to be more broadway friendly, with all the classes, auditions... And the broadway world shout out!!

And all those who claim that Lea Michelle doesn't have talent please explain this to me:

Who in this thread said she has no talent? Yankeefan just offered an opinion compared her to Megan Hilty, who is phenomenally talented in both of our opinions. But that doesn't mean the same as saying "Lea has no talent". It means "Opinion: Lea has less vocal talent than Megan".

"Plus IIRC he's singing the song about/to his father, so referencing Rachel doesn't even make any sense."

And especially what he says about her. "And if it wasn't for me, then where would you be, Miss Rachel Ber-REE". Rachel got where she was because she had an incredible voice and was focused on becoming a star. How can Kurt take credit for any of that? It makes me mad that somebody would get paid to write such sloppy lyrics and not seem to care that it doesn't even make sense.

And the whole idea of "I had a dream" is stupid. The kid is sixteen years old, he has more years ahead of him than behind him to make his dream work. So your dream failed this week, make another attempt next week and stop whining about it.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular I was talking about the show's bad criticism in general which most of time seems to come from the hatred for Lea. And you're absolutely right is all a matter of opinion, I love Megan and her rendition of Diamonds are a girls best friend is one of my favorites. I just prefer Lea maybe because she came first or because I see something of myself in her character. But you're right is a matter of opinion.

"Opinion: Lea has less vocal talent than Megan".

Not just on vocal talent either. Lea sings a song while closing her eyes and screwing up her face.

Megan acts a song. You look at the clip of "Just Keep Moving The Line" there are so many nuances she brings to the song. She's sultry, she's suggestive, she's coy, she's innocent, she's matter-of-fact, she pleads, she's frustrated, she's alive in the moment.

To quote Sondheim, Lea should have gone to an acting school that seems clear.

Except for the "new class" is just a watered down copy of the original. You've got the slightly dorky, picked on girl who has a great voice, the popular guy in whom she will likely be romantically interested, and even Jake is just a retread of Rachel/Puck, which was a hugely popular pairing in Glee fandom. Not to mention the bitchy blonde cheerleader and the LGBT character (Unique).
