I just watched the film of "Gone With the Wind" this past weekend again. It's one of my all-time favorite movies. But I see it for what it is: a period piece about a period piece. It's a 70-year-old movie about an era that fell apart 150 years ago. The story is told through "scarlet colored glasses."
I kept thinking how the movie and the book would never "work" if they were released today. The world has changed so much since the 1930s.
One of the reasons the film still works for me is the humor, particularly in the first half of the film. We can laugh AT Scarlett as well as WITH her. If we had to take her seriously through the barbecue at Twelve Oaks, the death of her first husband, and her trip to Atlanta before all hell breaks loose, I don't even think the movie would have worked back in 1939.
And I can't see that adding songs to this story would help it, elevate it or improve it in any way at all.
Leave it alone! It's a story from the 1930s about a genteel era of the 1860s... and BOTH are now gone with the wind.
A brief news piece focusing on the Margaret Martin:

I went to the musical's website and watched the actor blogs. I found it interesting how some of the cast members talked about not having a back-up plan should they not make it as an actor. And that having one almost means it is an easy out, out of the business. But it was fun hearing about how a lot of them heard they got cast. The Facebook one was hysterical.

Sounds like it makes CARRIE (another UK originated show) be My Fair Lady
The more bad s*** I hear about the show the more I can't wait to see it. If I end up enjoying myself (as long as it doesn't shut unceremoniously before May 10th), I'll be SERIOUSLY disappointed!
How about a different take?
Nathan as Rhett & Rosie as Scarlett - think about it.
Wish I could see it.
How about Harvey as Scarlett and Idina as Rhett?
Saw the show in one of the final previews and I have to say the critics/reviews are spot on! But I have to add that I did not like Jill Paice... her voice was horrible to listen to... very messy and flat and out-of-tune most of the time! Her acting was good though.
When I was watching the show Margaret Martin was sittin in front of me and I really wanted to hit her! There are NO emotional build up in the show, just plain story-telling and songs just did not contribute to this long story so it felt like it dreaded even more! Quite alot of classic Trevor Nunn directions can be seen here... very expectable, nothing new! Only redeeming factor is its costumes which are gorgeous! Sigh... I always felt, if edited/written right and directed right, this story has a potential of being an epic musical (same as LOTR) but sadly... they just focused on the whole story tellin of the story and not the emotion/meaning from it.

Laughed so much i fell of the sofa lol
Back in the mid 80s, through an amazing line of connections, I obtained permission to try and set up a musical based on "Casablanca." So I finagled a meeting with an extremely successful theater producer and his "people." We sat down in a room to discuss the possibility of the project: who could we get to write the score? The lyrics? Who could tackle the book? After about five - no more - minutes of discussion, there was a deadly pause in the conversation.
"This can't be done, can it?" I said.
The impresario said "Not if we ever want to have more of a career in this town."
We all looked at each other and started to laugh our heads off.
We all went out for lunch and I let the idea lapse.
Too bad these people didn't see the light....

Interesting. I wonder if they'll soon wish they had one with the press this show has been getting.
Jill Paice is out of the show until further notice due to severe throat infection. Sorry, if its been posted here.
Someone asked what the theatre was like where the show is playing.
.....and it isnt that much better inside!

I actually like the space itself - the round is nice and it's rather intimate. The staircases and corridors are a nightmare, though, rivaled by the labyrinth of the Novello.
Agreed; it's not terrible once you get into the auditorium. But it's finding your way to the auditorium in the first place that's the trick!
I quite liked the auditorium to be honest but have to agree its the FINDING of the place in the first place that's tricky! Every second I was watch that damn show, I just wished I can just kick everyone off stage and replace them with the London cast of 'PARADE' !!!!
Poor Jill. She never missed a performance of Curtains and only NOW does she get sick. I guess it caught up to her :)
...or a convenient illness?

ruthiefan_felix - Perhaps the reason you didn't like Jill's voice was that she was already suffering from the throat infection during the last few previews???????????? Any time I have heard heard her sing, she has been flawless. Never flat or out of tune. Maybe she was sick but tried to stay in the show till opening.
Rough stuff.
