— Chess is my favorite cast recording ever, even though I have never seen a fully satisfactory production
— The original cast recording of Hello, Dolly
— The King and I, the version with Donna Murphy
— South Pacific, the most recent LCT version
— 1973 production of Candide
— Original production of A Little Night Music
— The current production of Oklahoma is the best version I have ever listened to
— Mame with Angela Lansbury
—.Original cast recordings of Les Mia and Miss Saigon
— Original cast recording of Sweeney Todd
— Hamilton
— The Great Comet (not remotely typical...work your way up to it)
— Either the original cast recording or the Papermill Playhouse version of Follies
— Anything Goes...the Patti Lupone version
— Purlie
— Nine
— Original Broadway recording of Cabaret
— (Minority Opinion, but I love it) The Producers
— Dreamgirls...I have to admit that I have deleted a few songs...but the highs are incredibly high
— The original cast recording of Bells are Ringing. Here too, I have deleted a few songs, e.g., The Midas Touch
— The original cast recording of The Pajama Song
— Ragtime (although there are too many power ballads)
— Original cast recording of Rags... a 4 performance flop with a great score

'A Little Night Music' - Jean Simmons. By far and away, one of the best cast recordings of a musical.
'Sunset Boulevard' - Patti Lupone / World Cast Recording. Beautiful, and emotional - especially her rendering of 'New Ways to Dream'.
'Gypsy' - Tyne Daly. She brings more punch and energy to the role than anyone else I've heard on a cast recording. There's a reason she won the Tony.

Along the line of the tastes you already have:
-Songs for a New World
-Legally Blonde
-Spring Awakening
-Next To Normal
-Jekyll and Hyde
-Jeff Bowen's worst onstage line flub.

I would add “She Loves Me” to some of those lists. “On the Town”...I’d listen to Tony Yazbeck sing the phone booth. “Grand Hotel.” To name a few.

If you like cast albums where no one can sing. The OBC is unquestionably the best recording of this score.

I’d say start with shows which were the “big thing” of their decade. Rent, Hair, A Chorus Line, etc.
But I’d listen to “A Sunday in the Park with George” from beginning to end.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Carousel, and The Music Man are a few that have been omitted from other responses ITT that I think deserve a mention.

The Carousel Waltz is one of my favorite opening numbers for a musical (...can I call I that? Or would you call it the overture?). I absolutely agree. And no one should go for long without hearing "You'll Never Walk Alone".
