As a preface, I sadly do not live near New York at ALL, and therefore haven't seen ANY of the shows nominated this year. So yes, I love the Tony Awards (besides the fact that it's rigged and predictable and the performances are rarely a great representation of the show) because where else do you get an uninterrupted semi-staged song?! So no "it's better in the theatre" stuff for me (unfortunately...)

LION KING: B- I did watch Lion King during its tour and had goosebumps during the Circle of Life, but the voices here just didn't work.
IN THE HEIGHTS: B+ I was really excited to watch this performance, but as people have remarked before, it didn't seem as energetic as in the recording. Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda's mike was really turned up, so during all the cool harmony/overlapping parts you could only hear his part re: Grade the 2008 Tony performances... And I know there was nothing the performers could've done about it but still, a bummer.
XANADU: A Cheyenne Jackson and Kerry Butler are amazing re: Grade the 2008 Tony performances... And I loved the over-the-top cheesiness
GREASE: C Well, enough has been said already... but catchy
GYPSY: A Patti LuPone!!! Solid, powerful, but in control...and her speech was awesome :)
SOUTH PACIFIC: A Man, what a cast. Classic theatre
PASSING STRANGE: C Yeah, didn't get it, although I know it's supposed to be great
CRY-BABY: B Loved the dancing (I'm a sucker for the tap-dancing), but besides that not much to hyperventilate about
RENT: B- SO WANTED this to be great, but then there was the random tiny La vie Boheme segment and a weak ending...come on!!! with that kind of cast?!
A CATERED AFFAIR: C I've heard a lot of great things about this musical too, but definitely wasn't a great performance
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN: B No, not a fan of Young Frankenstein, but Megan Mulally REALLY made an impression after the earlier, not-exciting performances
THE LITTLE MERMAID: B- Seriously, HOW MANY TIMES DO THEY THINK THEY CAN KEEP DOING PART OF YOUR WORLD?! Yes, it's a great song, and yes, usually Sierra Boggess does a good job of it, but with Titus Burgess and Sherie Rene Scott, they only always perform one song?!!
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE: Great voices ( I love english accents :P ) and the picture thingies playing in the back WERE AMAZING!!!!!

and Whoopi Goldberg was awesome too :)

From a very technical standpoint on what sounded the best, Xanadu was easily the best of the night with South Pacific and Gypsy tied for a close second. This coming from a huge Kelli O'Hara and Patti LuPone fan. I thought Xanadu was just spot on vocally. It was basically Cheyenne's "f**k you" to the nominating committee, and it was glorious.

The Lion King: People can stay home they have seen the best part of the show

Rent: While not a fan of the show, it was a waste.

Cry-Baby: This was great, better than i hoped

In the Heights: Unwatchable, i left the room

Passing Strange: I failed to see what all the fuss was about

Xanadu: It was fun

Grease: I liked it, was thinking i was going to see a trainwreck ( that was ITH!)

Gypsy: Iam not a Patti fan, but if i was in the states, i would have booked a ticket as soon as the number finished. Outstanding.

South Pacific: This was great, Kelli was wonderful

Sunday in the Park with George: They did pick a really boring number

The Little Mermaid: This was boring, they had a empty stage and nothing

A Catered Affair: I love this show

Young Frankenstein: Megan was wonderful, it should get bums on seats

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

The Lion King: B-
Rent: B
Cry-Baby: C- The song was boring, and even though the choreography was good, it wasn't good enough to make the whole number compelling.
Passing Strange: F I was just astounded that this type of performance is allowed on Broadway.
Xanadu: A Cheyenne's voice was glorious.
Grease: C+
Gypsy: A+ Patti commanded the stage and her voice was killer.
South Pacific: B Don't care for this show all that much.
Sunday in the Park with George: A+ Gorgeous. For those of you who think this number is boring, listen to the lyrics...easily the most compelling and meaningful any performance at the Tonys had to offer...and I happen to love the song and its wonderful harmonies. re: Grade the 2008 Tony performances...
The Little Mermaid: B
A Catered Affair: C- Faith Prince disappointed me.
Young Frankenstein: B+
In The Heights: C- They somehow managed to make "counterpoint" sound hideous.

"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim
