I don't know how it works with the nominating but I don't think Billy Elliot would be one, would it? Is it only cast albums released this year (or between a certain time) that are nominated?
No, I don't believe that BE is eligible. Even if it was IMO it shouldn't even be nominated. I hope Next to Normal wins!
Let's see what would qualify if they had to be released this year:
Shrek, the Musical
Next to Normal
Rock of Ages
9 to 5
West Side Story (Would it qualify even if a revival?)
Any I missed?
Hair? (I'm not sure about revivals)
Story of my Life
According to Wikipedia
"Years reflect the year in which the Grammy Awards were handed out, for music released in the previous year. As of 2008, the current eligibility year is defined by the Recording Academy as beginning October 1, and ending the following September 30. Awards are given in February following the eligibility period."
Grammy Award for Best Musical Show
Thanks for clearing that up. So in that case...
Shrek, the Musical
Next to Normal
Rock of Ages
9 to 5
West Side Story (Would it qualify even if a revival?)
Hair (Same as WSS)
Story Of My Life
Liza's At The Palace! (Even if it is not a musical, IMO, it is still considered a cast recording)
Revival recordings are eligible for the Grammy award.
in my humble opinion, next to normal has already won the grammy award.
It's between Hair and next to normal.

Hair or Next to Normal.
Although I like Hair much more Next to Normal will win.

I'm surprised there's a strong vote for Next to Normal to win. Just out of curiosity, why do you think NtN has "already won"? Don't get me wrong, I'd be THRILLED if NtN won the Grammy and I think it really deserves it, but I think Hair is a great recording, too.

I'm not crazy about the N2N recording and I hate the HAIR recording, but I just think the Grammy voters will go with the new hit musical (that won the Tony for score and orchestrations) rather than a show from the 60s that audiences are (wrongly) going crazy for. I will be shocked if N2N does not win the Grammy.

What do you mean "wrongly going crazy for?" Just because you didn't like it, everyone else is wrong because they do?
What a ridiculous thing to say.
I could see "Rock of Ages" being a strong contender... It's a pretty great recording.
perfectliar, I hate HAIR and everyone on this board knows that. I do realize I am in the minority, but I had to put in my $0.02. ignore it if you want to.
and yes, MusicalMan76, it is quite possible that ROA could be a contender...it is released tomorrow so we will see how it is received.

I'm just saying, I can't stop playing the Shrek cd. I hope it wins.

I've read that you don't like Hair, and while I don't think it's a very good show, I know that this revival is pretty near perfect. It just seemed a little pompous to say everyone else is getting it wrong just because you don't like it.
Off-Broadway albums are eligible for the Grammy as well, so The Toxic Avenger and Road Show could be nominated.
And for everyone who seems confused, just because a show is a revival doesn't mean it's ineligible. The award is for Best Musical Show Album, not Best Musical Show Album with an Original Score. Gypsy won in 2004 (and was nominated last year), Annie Get Your Gun won in 2000, Chicago won in 1998, Guys & Dolls won in 1993, West Side Story won in 1986, etc.
I'd say 9 to 5 or N2N.
Hair or Next To Normal!
(yes, revivals can be nominated. South Pacific was nominated last year)
The Grammys tend to go with the most popular choice- Hair's album had an extremely strong debut and charted very well, and Next to Normal also had great sales following the Tonys. However, out of all the awards shows can win, the Grammys are probably the most irrelevant.
I hope the nominees are
Hair
Next to Normal
Road Show
West Side Story
9 to 5 or Shrek
Broadway Legend Joined: 7/1/04
So this year's eligible albums would be:
Shrek
Allegro
Next to Normal
West Side Story
Hair
The Story of My Life
Road Show
The Toxic Avenger
Chess in Concert
Pinkalicious
9 to 5
Rock of Ages
Sleeping Beauty Wakes
Liza's at the Palace
The Marvelous Wonderettes
Dear Edwina
And possibly 13, if they go by the release of the physical CD (otherwise they missed the cutoff by one day).
If Rooms, Glory Days and Twelfth Night are released by the end of August then they will also be eligible.
I bet the nominees will be
HAIR
SHREK
N2N
WSS
9 TO 5
And I think N2N will win. But I hope HAIR does. But WAT, I'd hardly call N2N a hit. It's doing well for now but once the summer's over, it should be interesting to see what happens. It hasn't made back its investment. Unless you're talking about a critical hit...then yes. But so is HAIR.
I think N2N's Tony wins for orchestrations and score will put it over the edge but it'll most likely be a photo finish between N2N and HAIR. Then again, 9 TO 5 could sneak in there. The samplings on the site are pretty fantastic.
Wouldn't it be great if LIZA'S AT THE PALACE sneaks in and wins? I would totally be okay with that too!

I also do not care for this HAIR recording. The vocal arrangements and the voices are great, but it lacks the energy the show has in the theatre, and that is captured on the OBC album. Also, some of the sound engineering isn't the best.
