That is the strangest rush I've ever heard of-- a rush for people between the ages of 17-21...?
Also, apparently it's R-rated theatre, as you need to be accompanied by an adult if under 17.. what?

Interesting rush policy
Also do you guys think they'll actually stand their and check ID for every single person who walks in I mean how could they possibly do that

Thank God I'll be 17 in April...
I find it not kosher to have the theatre saying that nobody under 17 should see the show unaccompanied.

Posted: 1/22/11 at 8:46amTechnically, movie theaters aren't supposed to let anyone in under 17 to an R rated movie. So, I don't see the difference here except for it being live theater.

17 is a strange cut off..why not 18 (like movies) or 21 (like bars)?
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 1/22/11 at 9:12amMovies are 17, 21 to buy for a minor. I've always felt these guidelines were just that, guidelines, and I have no problem with an advisement. To not allow anyone under the age of 17 without an adult is pushing it. Why make it more difficult for the youth to go to the theater? I've always appreciated the rush and lottery policies for bringing those into the theater who either would not regularly be able to afford it or be interested in it. While the general audience for HIGH may not be the youth of America, I feel its pretty ridiculous for a regulation to be set...

@jaxel614
That is my sentiments exactly.
Obviously, a show of this sort is not for the WICKED fangirl demographic, but there are many teenagers under 17, (me inclusive, until April) who are savvy about theatre and may actually want to see this show, but cannot.
I find it ironic though that this has an age regulation, and not BOOK OF MORMON (as of yet...).

Posted: 1/22/11 at 12:34pmI saw this show with Kathleen Turner at Cincinnati's Playhouse In The Park. It is a fantastic show! very strong, very heavy, and very deep. Absolutely beautiful piece of theatre. I believe the theatre restricted the show to anyone over 18 due to the strong themes. The show also features alot of male nudity and alot of language which is why they restrict it.

I saw the show too. Since when is theatre rated? There are a lot of dark themed plays with plenty of nudity that are not restricted. The nudity in HIGH is brief, although it is male frontal. There was more nudity in EQUUS.
I can guarantee no one will be carding at the door. This is marketing.
Personally, this smells like a marketing ploy to get people into the theatre thinking it is more provocative than it is. Mamet plays don't get R ratings, so why should this?
This smells like an attempt to get people into the theatre to see nudity and foul language. Sadly that does sell seats. Its a tough market right now and whatever sells seats.
Warnings like that totally cheapen the show if you ask me. Mature theatre goers can handle coarse language nudity. Those who can't will walk out.

Posted: 1/22/11 at 1:05pmI'm sure there have been far more mature and graphic shows on Broadway before...why restrict it now?

Posted: 1/22/11 at 4:42pmI don't know for sure but my guess would be Evan, the kid playing the druggie. That makes more sense than the priest or nun.

There's not as much language in the play as you would think. I've heard lot worse in non-restricted plays.
The young male lead is completely naked rather briefly. Again, I've seen longer nude scenes without restrictions.

Posted: 1/22/11 at 5:59pmBook of Mormon simply has a notice warning of explicit language, no restriction- and I'm sure it'll be a whole lot more vulgar than this.

@VernonGersch Evan is incredibly high/drunk at the point where he takes off all of his clothes and attempts to rape Kathleen Turner during a therapy session at the end of act I

It looks Equus-ish.
And the druggie does look hot.
I guess the Merm was wrong,

HIGH isn't remotely like EQUUS, nor does it look like it, except that a younger male is naked for a brief period of time.
The druggie's name is Evan Jonigkeit, btw. He's a much-respected actor from Philadelphia.
I agree with Bettyboy. The "no one under 17 without adult guardian" is a marketing ploy. The last time I heard anything like that attempted was during the run of DRACULA THE MUSICAL. They needed it. I hope HIGH doesn't.
