Hm, It doesn't sound flat at all on my T.V.
Marc, check your PMs.
Been watching al night. Watched all the extras first, now I'm almost done with the film.
Def. going to invest in the Blu Ray version, as I'm not satisfied with my current DVD.

Did anyone happen to get the Locker gift set? I wanted the Link Lime but had NO luck finding it. My intention was to buy the 1 disc Wal-Mart version with the bonus disc they were offering and then the Link Lime giftset which would give me the 2 disc edition. I went to 2 Best Buys, Target, 2 Wal-Marts, Circuit City and Barnes & Noble (didn't think they'd have it but it was in the area). The only place that had the gift set at all was Best Buy and they only had pink - and not many of them. I called around to some that are pretty far from me just to see if it was out there but no luck. Unfortunately when you order it online you can't specify color. Since Amazon.com's picture was the green one, I placed my order online and i'm just hoping it ends up being the "Link Lime".
Did anyone happen to see this color in the stores today? and if so - where? Thanks for the help in advance if anyone can offer a suggestion. I know it sounds stupid, but I really wanted to find it.
Anyway, I watched the movie on the one disc version - this should hold me over until the 2 disc version arrives in the mail.
Thanks Again.

The giftsets are NOT a Best Buy exclusive; however the retailer is carrying most of the sets produced.
I was told fewer Lime Lockers were made - so that is the reason why you see so many Pink. They are rare.
I don't live near a Best Buy - so I too had to order from Amazon.
I really want a Lime Locker- but I have a feeling I will receive a Pink - and just have to live with it.
Brodyfosse123 - I have to completely agree with you on the Blu-Ray presentation. It's simply amazing and the standard DVD is pale in comparison.
Here in the UK Entertainment in Video distributors had a promo set that they sent out to key retail buyers which included the Blu Ray version, 2 disc DVD double disc, double CD plus the original Waters movie verison. This came in a Hairspray shaped can and was limited to about 50 copies. Now if only i can get my hands on one!!
That sounds fantastic!

Just a tidbit...
Target in south Austin TX...was sold out of wide screens when I got there...a lot of full screens left and a few 2 disc editions. I paid the extra $ and got the 2 disc set, as did 2 people around me as I was on the phone with the old roomie trying to figure out if the 2 disc set is wide screen (it is).
Watched everything on both discs. Very well put together. Had sound issues when i first came in (menu on the movie disc had no sound), but once the movie started everything went to normal including the menu sound.
Wow I love this movie.
I would actually prefer the full screen as the wide screen just doesn't cut it on a smaller television!!
Dottie, don't you have a Sugar Daddy to buy you a nice big TV and a home theater sound system?
Marc, I wish!! But thanks for the laugh.
But I do have a question, how is the "full screen" version labeled as opposed to "wide screen"? The Shake and Shimmy is apparently wide screen.
Thanks.
Odd to see that many haven't upgraded to widescreen TVs and merged into the high definition world. I embraced this many years ago. Come on, people. Time to catch up!
The ONLY way to see the Blu-ray DVD of HAIRSPRAY is on a 60-inch widescreen HD Sony TV with a 7.1 Sony receiver.
I think the last time I owned a regular square-screen 27-inch TV was about 15 years ago.
I am going to get the 2-Disc "Shake and Shimmy Edition" in a lil' bit, but does anyone know if it is widescreen or fullscreen? It'd be better if it was one of those DVDs with the option of widescreen or fullscreen.

Has anyone attempted the commentary with Shankman and Blonsky? If it's anything like their commentary on the extended "You Can't Stop The Beat" then it's sure to be ninety minutes of torture.

Are you offering some sort of incentive program? Even the smaller size (and quality) widescreen, hd-ready tvs can be cost-prohibitive. Someone who adapated 15 years ago clearly doesn't have that concern, but is it really that hard to conceive that not everyone can rush out and buy the latest technology?
"Shake and Shimmy Edition" is only available in Widescreen.
Phyllis - do you mean the commentary on the deleted "You Can't Stop The Beat" ending?
Nope.
ALL the DVDs and their contents are in widescreen, which seems to be the norm now. Only the Fullscreen single-disc DVD is in fullscreen.
Studios no longer are doing that: Select Widescreen or Fullscreen feature which was popular when DVDs first came out. Also, Columbia/Tri-Star seems to have been the only one doing this feature years ago. All other studios released flipper-discs, which was the Fullscreen version on one side and the Widescreen version on the other side. This was done before dual-layer disc existed. Seems people have started upgrading their systems to widescreen TVs, etc., which is why the studios tend to solely release their films widescreen, with a separate non-Special Edition Fullscreen DVD on occasion (depending on the film's success, really). Most DVDs are now only in Widescreen. Period.
BrodyFosse, I bought my telesion in 1990!! But I'm definitely in the market for a new one, since this one is on its last leg. I definitely got my money's worth, that's for sure.
The Widescreen version does offer more vertical picture:
Which is kind of cool - to see more leg action.
That crop you just did mateo is completely wrong.
HAIRSPRAY was shot in the aspect ratio of 2.35:1, which means it was not matted.
What you are showing is a full-frame image cropped to simulate a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, which is WRONG!
For the Fullscreen does NOT show more at the top and bottom -- it is equal to the widescreen 2.35:1 image. For the Fullscreen DVD they left the top and bottom of the image -- they only cut on the left and right sides of the image.
You're showing a totally misleading representation and makes people believe you see more of the top and bottom of the image in Fullscreen -- which you do NOT since the film wasn't matted when filmed.
I hope this clears up YOUR confusion between the difference of widescreen and fullframe/fullscreen.
Here's the difference of how HAIRSPRAY was done for Widescreen and the Fullscreen DVD:
WIDESCREEN 2.35.1 DVD:
FULLSCREEN 1.33.1 formatted DVD:
See how both versions show the same composition -- top and bottom of image?
This is what YOU were stating:
A Fullframe image being cropped to resemble Widescreen:
huh??
no.
I screencapped them, I should know.
The rectangular image is the widescreen presentaion - and the square image is the fullscreen presentation.
shall i take a few more caps for you to see...
Are you screen capping the fullscreen DVD and the widescreen DVD separately, or are you just 'cropping' the fullscreen image and simulating a widescreen image?
I'm quite familiar with film and I do know that HAIRSPRAY was shot anamorphically widescreen and never with a 'matted' frame.
When a film is shot matted, they simply are putting a fake matte to resemble a widescreen image, though they are really filming in fullscreen. In this case yes, the fullscreen DOES show more at the top and bottom as this is how is was filmed but really wasn't intended to be seen. If you look at old VHS or Beta releases of films, you'll see too much on the fullscreen version, such as visible boom mikes, camera cables on the floor. Though it was shot fullscreen, it was to be matted for widescreen, which would have blocked those non-intended-to-be-seen images from the film.
