Porter thought Lola was gay but Harvey said Lola was straight. I also don't see Bruno Mars doing the role anyways.
Not to mention, no one talked about this movie apart from this tabloid article when Harvey (possibly flippantly) mentioned his dreamcast, if a movie were to ever happen. Think we can all step back and relax on this one, folks.

If their sexuality should not matter to they're playing a role from the producer's standpoint? It's whatever. It's another thing entirely to EXCUSE it because "We don't know". You want to play a Queer character, you have to own up to your own queerness and own it for me. ESPECIALLY men this far into their careers like Wayne Brady & Bruno Mars. I'm more forgiving as it pertains to young folk on say Heartbreakers from doing it, but people who have had LONG careers? Give me a break."
I don't know about you, but coming to terms with my sexuality is something extremly personal and something that I don't feel we need to ask every actor who plays a queer role to show us their "gay passport" for approval.

I hear what you're saying, but I don't think that's the point TheaterFan4 was making. It's the co-opting of our identities and personalities and culture for a movie or some media circus like a PR event (cough Charlie Puth cough), and then being able to shed it next day and be all "oops, lol no you misread my intentions". It reinforces the idea that being gay, femme, or trans is just a choice / costume. Have your personal journey, no one's coming for you. But we as a community don't have to be tolerant of the said co-opting; they're not owed acceptance for effectively reinforcing the hurtful stereotypes on the very community they are claiming to represent.
An example is Stanley Tucci - who has never once claimed to be gay but his portrayal has never once appeared offensive to me. It's done with utmost care and reverence.

I see absolutely no necessity for this movie.

Yeah...everyone in Hollywood is eyeing Harry right now, especially because of the way Don't Worry Darling created its own self-priming press tour.
Harry will be the male Lady Gaga for a while yet: The musician turned "actor" that every producer will name drop to the Post when they're trying to gauge public interest in a project.

Totally agree.

Seems like a good time for them to start planning this. The major sit down productions and tours have concluded and aside from the off-Broadway production, it’s mostly playing in regional and community theatres. Those productions don’t pay out the kind of royalties like the originals, so the creators might as well squeeze the property for one more fat check from a movie.

Then they'd better come to terms with it pretty quickly if they're going to be starring in a major role as a Queer person. Especially in 2022 in your late 30s and 50s. We have enough Queer talent to cast people instead of resorting to entertaining closet cases well into their careers.
Like if you want to cast someone because they're a name and not because of their sexuality, then have at it. I don't agree with it, but its whatever. It's the problem of others who come up and parade around "Well we don't KNOW their sexuality!" Just accept that they were hired for their name and don't try to edge them into a community they have no business in.
Reminds me of 10 years ago when Tom Meehan was like "I'd love to see Meryl Streep play Miss Hannigan." It's just an author putting something out there. To my knowledge, there is no studio or director for a Kinky Boots adaptation.
Let's also remember that, in Harvey's mind, Lola is a heterosexual transvestite. He and Billy Porter disagreed on that, and Harvey doubled-down on his assertion in his book (he felt Wayne Brady was the closest to the way he envisioned the part, while also acknowledging that the role would not be what it was without Billy Porter).

I mean, is there any real "necessity" for any movie?

At least Gaga can act.
But can she? That's debatable.

It was a bone of contention, as Billy Porter insisted Lola was a gay man. I wonder if Harvey’s preference for an ostensibly straight performer in the role relates to that?"
I was thinking about this a bit more today while listening to the album. "Hold Me In Your Heart", which is Lola's big 11 o'clock number, absolutely makes no sense at all if Lola is not a super femme gay/trans kid.
