Styles, Mars eyed for KINKY BOOTS movie
Why not get Brandon Urie as Charlie? Does Porter not want to play Lola again? Or Wayne Brady?
Brandon is not an actor, he hated the rabid fans at that show. Billy and Wayne don't get people in the seats.
More importantly, who told Harry Styles he could act and why does he keep getting roles? Are people looking for a Deer In Headlights expression for everything in all films now? Nah. They can do much better.

It seems to me the time for a Kinky Boots movie was within a few years of the musical coming out. Can't imagine this feeling as "progressive" or exciting today.
No one cares about talent. They want to make money.
I think not casting a person of the LGBTQ community would be a big side step for this.
Harvey has always been of the opinion that Lola is a drag queen but not a homosexual or a trans-non-binary person. It was a bone of contention, as Billy Porter insisted Lola was a gay man. I wonder if Harvey’s preference for an ostensibly straight performer in the role relates to that?
I also wonder if the multiracial and ethnically ambiguous Mars would be a controversial choice when contrasted to Lola’s traditionally black-and-proud presentation.

I just don't see Bruno being good in the part. He'd sing the crap out of it. But not sure I see him as a dramatic actor.
And that's interesting. I'm a huge fan of drag and can think of maybe one drag performer is hetero. Would have loved to see how Wayne Brady played it.
I honestly hate the idea of a straight man playing Lola. It does not make sense at all. As for who I'd love to see play it in a big production / movie if it can't be Billy Porter again - I'd be curious to see Monet Exchange take a gander at it.
Yes but can Monet pull off a British accent?
(Not that Billy Porter ever could either...)

I don't mind Harvey's opinion and I know there are plenty of cis heterosexual queens in the world, but he wrote this in tandem with Casa Valentina and I think that idea just was in his head and I'd rather see this part go to LGBT actors.

He can eye whoever he wants but there’s no way in hell Mars would be even remotely interested in this.

This.^ Dozens of queer performers could kill this and would just give Mars awful optics.
Has there been any blowback with Wayne Brady being attached to the role so often, or is he getting by on a lifetime of goodwill?

The inconsistent outrage drives me crazy.
Bruno Mars in drag:
Movie producers want stars who will sell tickets internationally. Makes sense they’d want these two music superstars. Kinky Boots isn’t Shakespeare. They’d do just fine.
And we truly don’t know the sexuality of anyone (Mars, Brady) so who is to say they aren’t bi.

Didn’t Bruno Mars come out of the closet then turn around and claim he was kidding and go back in? I doubt he would want to do this.

This is a tired storyline. "We don't know" was something acceptable back during the first run of Will & Grace. In 2022? Nah... If their sexuality should not matter to they're playing a role from the producer's standpoint? It's whatever. It's another thing entirely to EXCUSE it because "We don't know". You want to play a Queer character, you have to own up to your own queerness and own it for me. ESPECIALLY men this far into their careers like Wayne Brady & Bruno Mars. I'm more forgiving as it pertains to young folk on say Heartbreakers from doing it, but people who have had LONG careers? Give me a break.
Bruno Mars has been with his girlfriend, Jessica Caban, since 2011. They live together.

Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester were married for 33 years (until his death). He was gay (and allegedly, so was she). What’s your point?

Anthony Perkins was married to Berry Berenson for about 20 and Grover Dale to Anita Morris for 21 years - so I do see your point. Dale and Perkins were actually lovers before they married both of them.

THIS was the report I was recalling about Mars coming out.

My comment wasn't meant to make "a point". Just to convey information. But because those celebs in the past were gay doesn't mean he is gay.

Well hasn’t Harvey said the character of Lola isn’t gay? That was a Billy Porter choice. Also Lola wasn’t queer in the film either. I don’t think the actor needs to be gay or queer to play the part. If we want to respect diversity then we have to make room for straight cis men who wear women’s clothes and do drag.

Billy Porter was playing a straight man?

Porter thought Lola was gay but Harvey said Lola was straight. I also don't see Bruno Mars doing the role anyways.
