one of my top 3 shows of all time. i saw it at the jane street theater 11 times!
I really like Hedwig. Saw the show in San Francisco with Asa Somers playing Hedwig (WOW!)and also have the DVD.
Hedwig's a Goddess. That's all there is to it.
what is the show about??
oh how I love converting Hedheads!! In short, Hedwig is basically the story of a young boy named Hansel who grows up in Communist East Berlin. Eventually he meets and falls in love with an American G.I. who wants to take Hansel to America. But before they can get married, Hansel needs to get a sex change operation and he takes his mothers name-Hedwig. Unfortunately the operation is botched and Hedwig is left alone and divorced in Kansas with an "amgry inch."
Hope I didn't give too muc haway, but check out this musical NOW! it's one of my all-time favs =)
hmmmm gonna have to say..... sounds a little odd for my taste, but I can check it out anyway. Does it have bad language or sex or anything, cause then my parents will be all over it. They are only overprotective when it comes to what I watch. But for some reason they will let me go wherever I want...... strange....
well the show takes palce during a concert the movie is definitely more graphic
it was a great show.the movie was good but i like the show alot better. john cameron mitchell was awesome in both and andrea martin is funny in the movie. and the music is great.
Skip the sex change. It's about a young man who is confused with love, and is desperatley trying to find the one that he is 'made for.' I think the song 'Origin of Love' is actually based on a real belief or religion...can't remember where I read that, though. And yes, he's a dragqueen.

Thanks for your replies everyone.
Well, I have to admit, from what I've heard it sounds dreadful. But, I can't hear the lyrics that well (the guitars seem to drown them out) and the sound levels aren't all there. I'm sure it'd be much different in production. It seems to come on BWW radio all the time...
Don't decide on what other people tell you first. Some things aren't even accurate. Listen to the CD. Decide for yourself what you think of it.
Actually, Hedwig is based on Plato's Symposium (the song,
"Origin of Love" in particular). It was a wonderful, magnetic evening at the Jane Street, and John Cameron Mitchell found some very smart ways to honor the film's stage roots while opening it up as a film. So, if you can't see it on stage, I'd recommend the film highly. Dreadful it's not.
Jade, you can't just "forget the sex change operation" since it's kind of a major part of the movie, ya know?
and, BwayBaby, yeah, it mas cussing and sex, but honestly, I don't think its worse than anything you see on MTV!! I hope you'll get to check it out...
edited to add: my inability to type is REALLY annoying me =/

i think i saw it with you marcy
I don't watch MTV cause I think the things they say and do are riciculously immature and stupid!! Guess that argument doesn't work, huh? lol
LOL I know what you mean, brdwaybaby, but, Hedwig is still MUCH better than anything mtv puts on, so, go see the movie and be amazed =)
Princess, the movie in a nutshell, is about a guy trying to find himself. He just happens to be a homosexual, and had a botched sex operation. It's a part of the character. It's like saying 'Yeah, it's about this guy who has a third nipple and yadda yadda yadda...'
I have not seen the show - but I saw the movie and thought it was pretty dreadful. And the songs are worse than dreadful.

Hedwig is definitely not for everyone. It is a true "rock musical" and there are not really any "showtune" songs in it. It explores new topics, and if you are open to it, seeing the show is an intense, moving experience. I love the music, and I think it is very daring--it stetches the boundaries of musical theatre.
I hardly think that Hedwig "stretches the boundaries of musical theatre". I agree it is daring and the basic premise/storyline is intriguing, even dramatically exciting. With superior writing, it could be a great show. But it does not pull it off. I don't think it's even about a difference in musical tastes. Unfortunately, the script and score simply are not very good.
bob, if it's not about people having different tastes, then, how can you explain those of us who think the script and the score are WONDERFUL?! I can understand how it't not everyone;s cup of tea, but, thats all it is: people don't like the same things =)

Bob, what I meant by Hedwig stretching the boudaries of musical theatre is that in the stage version, Hedwig and Yitzhak are the only two characters onstage, Hedwig is backed by a rock band, and Hedwig alternates between songs and monologues with a few ineractions with Yitzhak. Even without regard to content, it is a very different show from "Oklahoma," which has several leads, an ensemble, a traditional orchestra, etc. It could be argued that Hedwig is a drag show or a rock concert with a thru line, rather than a piece of musical theatre. The movie was good, but it didn't really do the show justice.
