Well looks like quite a few critics reviewed the show with Donna anyway:

I was perusing thru the Playbill Vault for Hello Dolly.  It is strange that Donna Murphy is not listed in the cast credits.   surprise

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I attended the 2pm show on Saturday 7.8.17, the Playbill did not have Bette Midler listed.  They have  separate Playbills for the Donna and Bette shows.

As they should.

I feel like giving Donna Murphy an understudy slip is almost insulting to her, in addition to the fact that theatregoers tend to not enjoy the "slip surprise" in their Playbill (despite the fact they have blatant signage outside for when Donna is on)

I agree the understudy slip would be an insult.   But I am surprised that both are not listed in both Playbills.  In particular, Donna listed as the "Alternate" Dolly.   In The Visit, Donna McKechnie was listed as the "alternate" in the Playbill at all performances, as were the alternates in Next to Normal.     I don't remember, did Donna have regularly scheduled performances?

I think the situation for DOLLY is different than THE VISIT in that.

1) The latter came and went with a whimper. It wasn't EVENT theatre as many perceive DOLLY to be.

2) Donna did not have any regular scheduled performances in THE VISIT and covered only a handful of times when Chita was ill. Donna was also listed as a "standby", which is different from being an "alternate", as she was not regularly scheduled for any performances, but was first in line to take over if need be.

Thanks for the clarification.   On the children in Matilda and Billy Elliott they are not listed as alternates.   They all get equal billing, correct?    Haven't they also had a Christine in POTO that would do certain scheduled performances (i.e. matinees).   Would she be listed as an alternate?

Chita Rivera never missed a performance of The Visit. Donna McKechnie never went on for her, nor was she ever listed in the Playbill as an "alternate."

Next to normal had no alternates at any point during its run.

I love when people just come on here and make things up.

I finally saw Donna tonight. I've seen Bette twice and appreciated and enjoyed her star performance, but wow, what a character Donna has created! Donna's performance is a joy from start to finish, I couldn't stop smiling. She looks and sounds fantastic, I loved all of the optional notes she sings, she really owns the score and makes it her own, whereas Bette keeps the signing very basic and safe.

Her Dolly is hilarious, full of life, and heartbreaking, she really has created such a fully developed three dimensional character.

If you haven't seen Donna yet, I highly suggest you see her glorious performance as Dolly.

The entire production was sparkling and feels more grounded with Donna in the lead. The audience was extremely enthusiastic  and very appreciative of Donna's performance, many people in the mezz stood for the title song. It was nice to see the show with more of a regular theater crowd and not surrounded by tourists.

Such a lovely night!

I thought Chita had missed a performance or two of THE VISIT. I remember some show she was in fairly recently where she missed a handful of performances due to illness. (Could it have been DROOD?)

I admit I could be wrong, but I utterly resent the implication that I came on and "made stuff up" for the hell of it.

Chita did miss a few performances of Drood, but when Allison Cimmett went on for her, she was listed as her understudy, never as an alternate.

Posting something that you admit may not be true makes it look like you're just making things up. If you didn't know this, you probably shouldn't have posted incorrect information that you tried to post as a fact

Donna Murphy was exquisite last night. She exuded joy and life and created a three dimensional character. All her monologues were so fantastic. And the voice OMG. She added high notes and used her voice to its full advantage. I can safely say I enjoyed her so much more then Bette. The standing ovation after the title song was well deserved. I couldn't take my eyes off Donna. She WAS Dolly. The heartbreak and rebirth was so present in her Dolly. I'm just so amazed. Please go see her if you can!! I really want a new cast album with her :/

I was also there last night and thought Donna was exquisite. She sounded wonderful and was just so full of joy and life. She is truly one of the best singing actresses we have, and she's really remarkable in this role.

I agree, last night reaffirmed for me that she really is one of Broadway's best singing actresses of all time. I mean who can go from Fosca to Dolly so effortlessly? She loses herself in every single role. I hope she will continue to work regularly, she is a stunning performer.

I couldn't take my eyes off of her during the food scenes too. She went IN on that turkey leg LMAO and special shoutout to Kate Baldwin who's voice is glorious. Though it seemed she wanted to go slower then the orchestra. Also I have Donna's "Hello HEELLOOO" stuck in my head.
