Touche, CyCos, touche.

Caroline, or Change was the most amazing musical that year. the arc that Caroline Thibodaux undergoes in that show far outweighs whatever Elphaba had rhymed her way through. sorry.
Wicked would've been better had they have stuck to the original text instead of creating another High School Musical slash Harry Potter for chicks show.
it lost. go watch Enchanted again.

Maybe it was better.
I was not that enamored of Wicked . Mrs R who read the book was not either.

i have never seen avenue q and am a HUGE wicked fan, and just because a group of theatre experts voted it as a better musical does not make it BETTER in EVERYONES eyes. But as broadway enthusiasts we need to respect everyones opinions and accept that while Wicked may not have won the Tony award, it is still a great show. A lot of people like Avenue Q better. That is the way it is.

Wicked lost because it was the one year that the Tony voters decided to put down their crack pipes.

WICKED lost because of you, musicaltheatrefan.
How do you feel now?
Enough with the innane Glinda/Elphaba/WICKED threads. It's giving me a headache.

Either way- the Tony's that Ave Q beat Wicked out for were like pity prizes to Ave Q as it will never make as much money as Wicked does, ever.
They're both good musicals. leave it alone.

"What are you talking about. The only forgettable songs are "March of the Witch Hunters" and "Dear Old Shiz"."
Sort of off-topic, but "March of the Witch Hunters" is the exact same song as "The Mob Song" from Beauty and the Beast.

Wicked should of won.
Should HAVE won. Should HAVE.
And no, it shouldn't have won.

seriously, the bigger question in this thread should be: How did Caroline, or Change lose to a show about puppets?

While I do love Avenue Q, I do agree with Liverpool, in that Caroline, or Change should have definitely won Best Musical that year.
At least Wicked didn't win. That's the most important thing.

I loved both shows and they're both so different! I don't think Wicked needs to worry about not having the Tony...They've got the box office (They're still at #1 making a killing). Avenue Q was something fresh. Like Spring Awakening last year and ITH this year.
by the way, "As Long as You're Mine" is a great duet as is "A Fine Fine Line"

I like a Fine fine line. But, it isn't a duet.
Wicked is a VERY flawed show. I do like it but it is VERY flawed. Everything from the show relying totally on the who is playing the leads to make the performance a good one and not the material. In Avenue Q the material itself is so good that even if the actor flubs or is having a bad night it will still be a good show. If whoever is playing Elphaba goes flat during Wizard and I or Defying Gravity the show is totally lost.
Wicked just uses the technical aspects as a way to make the show. The show seems to be about all the visuals and not the material. I do think that the lyrics to the score of Wicked are the most revolting I have ever heard in musical theatre. I think a 2nd grader could come up with better lyrics then what is in the score for Wicked.

What it comes down to is AVE Q is a much better written and performed show. I never thought anything could be better than PHANTOM or LES MIZ, but AVE Q has become my all time favorite. The puppets get away with things that a human can't. It has great message such as tolerance and humanity (yes, humanity shown by puppets)and it is extremely and consistantly funny.
WICKED is based on one of the worst novels I have ever read and they could not make that book really work on stage. The songs are inadequate Band Aids trying to hold it together.

haha that was funny but so true!
big wicked fan here, but agreed - the lyrics are a bit well..."bridges we'll cross we didnt know we crossed until we crossed?" cmon man.
avenue q shouldnt have won though (biased as i am since im a tad afraid of puppetty things) but caroline or change I thought was a sure winner.
but oh well.

I think a better title for this thread would be, "How did a show about nothing lose to a show about Life?"

I don't know, I mean Wicked was groudbreaking! Shouldn't we award that? It took the term "adaptation" to a whole new level! It had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the original novel!
PLEASE! Do not post anything negative or dramatic! DidYouReallyHearMe has LOST the ability to ignore such posts and he will comment! Please, help him.

Wicked lost because that little show about puppets had a stronger emotional core and the best parts of Wicked were purely superficial. Which is ironic considering the lesson it attempts to teach. Wicked won the awards it deserved -- sets, costumes, all the visual stuff. Those are the only strong points.
