"oh for crying out Loud jackson992 is having a laugh "
I should certainly hope so, I'm getting worried.
his attempts at getting laughs and attention is really getting old. he's not doing the best job at getting laughs.
"There are bridges you've crossed you didn't know you've crossed until you crossed" is one of my favorite musical theatre song lines EVER. It's amazing, and it is so true, even if it uses "crossed" three times.
'Avenue Q is NOT a show about puppets. It's a show in which some of the characters are played by puppets." So true. There is more heart and soul in the song "There's a Fine, Fine Line" then there is in the entirety of "Defying Gravity" sequence.

Hoi polloi. Ugh. It wasn't clever when Shwartz used it and it's not clever now either.
Not to mention he used it incorrectly.
I like Wicked. It's fun, and hella entertaining, but I do think it has some of the most banal and pedestrian lyrics I've ever heard.
I saw Avenue Q for the first time last night and think that hands down it's the better show.
I just saw Avenue Q for the second time a couple of days ago. This time, the tour instead of the original Broadway cast. And it reminded me exactly why the show won Best Musical. It is ingenious. The concept was so unique and original for Broadway and the show is brilliantly constructed. To say it is just "a parody of Sesame Street" or to sum it up as a "show about puppets" is to completely ignore the content, writing, staging and performances.
I've seen Wicked three times and it is fun. It has some great songs (and some clunkers) and it is visually exciting (but slow and dull in places). But it is a typical dramatic musical spectacle. The structure and score are standard book musical fare and while it is undeniably popular, it simply wasn't the best musical that year. Critics agreed. The best musical isn't always the most popular and vice-versa. Sometimes it happens.
But at least we're bringing up relevent new topics for dicussion that could never have been brought up on a previous thead where it may have already been discussed for the 500th time in the last 4-and-a-half years.
It had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the original novel!
Actually, it does. It just doesn't follow the novel very closely.
PS - There is no such thing as "should of". It's "should've", which is a contraction for "should have". "Should of" has absolutely no meaning whatsoever.
Any bets on when some moron is going to bitch about "confessa" because they listened to their stupid friends instead of the actual lyrics?

did the OP just watch Showbusiness for the first time or something?
WICKED is good and all, but AVENUE Q has a way better book and is overall suprior.

The thing I LOVE about this thread is how the people who are defending Ave Q (i.e. most of us) speak about the entire production. Those defending Wicked (i.e. only one or two people here) are using this one lyric and these couple of songs and the fact that IDINA MENZEL IS THE BEST!!!11!!!1
Avenue Q is the better show, and that's that. Once again, the Tony category is "Best Musical", not "Favorite Musical". It's cool you like Wicked, it has a strong appeal and that's the reason it still packs them into the house. But it still doesn't make it better, and you need to recognize that.
And yes, I've seen both shows. Wicked was with my grandparents, who asked the same question. (they saw Ave Q, too) Which proves that your question isn't totally idiotic, because some people wonder, too. Unfortunately, most are rather uneducated in the craft of musical theatre. (not saying that you aren't, but just the majority) It's the same reason Transformers didn't win the Academy Award for "Best Picture" last year. A lot of people liked it, some loved it, and it made a boatload of money, but does that make it the best? No. "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" were the two vying for the prize because they WERE the best that year. So was Ave Q...

TooDarnHot, if you're going to act like such a pompous jackass, spell my name right at least, ! Shame!
Um, isn't this kind of old? Like 4 years old?
Anyways, Wicked is really good, but Avenue Q is just better.
Rent Showbusiness: The Road to Broadway
You'll see how it went down. =)
"But as broadway enthusiasts we need to respect everyones opinions and accept that while Wicked may not have won the Tony award, it is still a great show."
I see no reason why we have to accept Wicked as a "great show" just because we are broadway enthusiasts. I will accept it as a good show, a bit mediocre, but far from great.
Really, Spamalot winning Best Musical was a much bigger upset in my eyes.
I find the book of "Wicked" to be amazing. It's a story of friendship and becoming accepted. It also deals with animal rights, totalitarianism and other current issues. It touched me, I cried during "For Good". I don't understand how someone can't leave the theatre and not be in amazement. "Avenue Q" is a fun, cute little show, but may I remind you, it is a spoof on "Sesame Street". At least "Wicked" won Drama Desk Best Musical.

Caroline and Piazza were both ROBBED.
The biggest robbery ever was "The Color Purple". To a rock concert.
Wicked is a spoof...of the original novel lol
As many others have stated, Caroline, or Change should have won Best Musical over both of those shows. It had the best new score on Broadway since Sunday in the Park with George. I'm neither African American nor Jewish, but Caroline touched me in a way that Wicked and Avenue Q didn't even come close to doing.

I wouldn't consider the Four Seasons' music "rock". I'm assuming you mean Spring Awakening, but that won the 2007 Best Musical Tony. The Color Purple lost Best Musical to Jersey Boys in 2006.
And Drowsy should have won, but that's besides the point.

The thing about Avenue Q and Wicked is they are both so entirely different. Avenue Q songs are cute whereas the songs from Wicked are dramatic. Songwise I like the songs from Wicked better. But I always like dramatic songs over comedy, such as stuff like Spamalot.
LOL. Yep. Wicked's score is just so intellectual and dramatic.
It's more fluff than AVENUE Q.

Most everything in Wicked is serious unlike the one song from Avenue Q that is serious.
Serious does not automatically equal good.
While Q's score might sound less serious. It deals with a lot more adult and real issues than WICKED.
