I hate dumbasses.
Me too. Why can't they leave our board alone and go get eaten alive at ATC?
Because, my dear, it's America.
others may perceive US as dumbasses too and want us to leave. Even so I know that I'm not as idiotic as Jackson, Bryan, or MusicalTheatreFan3.
It gives me reassurance that I'm not a total douche. You know? There's always worse out there...

That's a matter of opinion heh. You prolly didn't even vote for Hillary:)
You don't classify scores as "dramatic" ... yes, there can be a consistent tone of dramatic music but a score (or music) wouldn't just be "dramatic"
WICKED is a pop score. AVENUE Q is a musical comedy score.
Therefore you are a dumbass Jackson.
And let's leave politics out of this, sweetheart.

I didn't use the word score tho you can easily tell the difference in a score for a comedy and that of a dramatic piece. You did hit tho on why Wicked succeeds so well, because it is a pop score.
I only saw 2 of the 4 shows nominated that year before the Tonys. They were "Wicked" and "Caroline or Change". I was very interested in seeing "Avenue Q" until I heard the OBCR and saw clips from the show. It just did nothing for me and made me decide not to see it. Same with "Boy From Oz". Had I been able to see into the future when I ordered tickets for my trip that year, I may have seen Q and Boy. I now think that because of what happened in 2004, I may just have to see Q when it hits Denver in Sept. But based on the 2 shows I saw, Caroline or Change was the clear winner for me. As far as scores go, I love Wicked and have seen it twice. Caroline's score was nothing short of brilliant. I didn't start listening to "Taboo" until a year after it closed and looking back, would not have been upset had it won Best Score. And I will be honest, I did not care for the way Q campaigned for the Tonys and how the majority of voters "fell for it". I walked past the theatre that year and just stood there and shook my head. At that point, I decided that I definetly would never see the show. But over the past 4 years, even though I still do not like the score or what I have seen, I decided that I may see it so I can judge the show as a whole and not just the snippets I have seen or heard. I honestly thought that Caroline or Wicked would be the winner that year. In my opinion, Wicked is a big show and a lot of fun. I had no problems with the score and am actually on my second copy of the CD. I saw it a second time on tour and didn't enjoy it as much. Mostly because of the scaled down set and some changed blocking/staging. But I will say that Caroline is tied with Sweeney for my favorite musical and I really think it should have won. I also would have been fine with Pinkins or Chenoweth taking Best Actress. Menzel was wonderful, but not my favorite out of the performances I was able to see. Just my random thoughts.
Jackson - the songs ARE the score.
you said.. "Avenue Q songs are cute whereas the songs from Wicked are dramatic"
perhaps SOME of the songs have a dramatic tone (what about Popular, What Is This Feeling, Dancing Through Life, One Short Day, Wonderful, For Good?) but the score/music/songs are not just classified as "dramatic". They are pop. They are contemporary.
AVENUE Q is not. It's more traditional musical comedy. But that doesn't effect the quality. A pop score could be an awful score. The WICKED score/music/songs are extrmely overrated, sweetie.
"Avenue Q" is a fun, cute little show, but may I remind you, it is a spoof on "Sesame Street".
You've never actually seen Avenue Q, have you?

I love the music from both shows but I would much rather sing songs from Wicked. I'm not sure what you meant by posting that list as Popular is a comedy song and For Good is a serious song. Prolly my favorite song in the show too. The only exception for me that I love singing in Avenue Q is There's a Fine Fine Line. Absolutely gorgeous song.

Avenue Q is BETTER. There's your answer.
I have not seen AVENUE Q, but I have heard selections from the score. I have seen WICKED and love the album.
I think AVENUE Q won because it did something unique and different. It's not my cup of tea, but there is a lot of talent and originality there (not to mention heart).

For about 3 years I've thought Wicked was a great show and unfairly lost to Ave. Q..until I saw Avenue Q this Monday. The score/songs, as many people have said, are a lot deeper than Wicked's. Avenue Q's are a lot more catchy and have meaning to them. Wicked has a couple catchy songs, like Popular, but if you think about it, the lyrics and attempts to rhyme are pretty...bad[for lack of a better word]. Most of the people Ive talked to said that they could see the words coming even when they've never heard the music before . The overall production of Wicked also leaves you wanting more, because after all the hype, you're probably expecting a spectacle. I loved Wicked for a while, but when I actually saw it, I realized that this show, even though it's a decent show, should've not won, and Avenue did deserve to win. The music from Avenue Q is thoughtful, edgy, clever, and plain out hilarious. The overall production is also better than Wicked's. Lighting-wise, even though Wicked is supposed to be a big flashy show, the lights in Avenue Q are actually a little better, IMO. I don't know if they've changed since 2004, but when I saw it a couple of days ago, I was amazed at how amazing the lighting in a show like Avenue Q could be. Now, there are times when Wicked has pretty cool lighting, like during Defying Gravity or No Good Deed, but otherwise it's not that "exciting."
*This is just my opinion as to why. lol.
how did Into the Woods lose Best Musical to a really bloated musical with about 2 original melody lines?

Avenue Q is an overall better musical. Wicked is a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful show. It's hard to compare two shows that are so different. But in general, I'd pick the puppets.
I also really hate the crazy fan-girls that obsess about Wicked. Not that that would change which show won the Tony.
Those comparing Ave. Q and Wicked...did you by any chance see Caroline or Change or Boy From Oz?
I saw "Boy from Oz". I liked "Wicked" better, but I still liked "Boy from Oz" a lot. If the Tonys had 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place, if I was a voter I would put it as
1. Wicked
2. The Boy from Oz
3. Caroline or Change
4. Avenue Q
SHUT UP!

I also enjoyed Boy From Oz. I hated Caroline Or Change with a passion tho. It can't even compare with Wicked and Avenue Q
