I saw SPRING AWAKENING for the first time...
it was terrible.
How did this hot mess win a Tony?
The amount of talent on that stage also lacked significantly. Went with my friend who had seen it the month it came to Broadway, and thinks it's gone down into the hell hole since then.
What's up with this??

Very informative. Thank you.
It's a genuine question, folks.

Well, I could be completely obvious and say a lot of people disagreed with you. I personally thought the show was good, but over hyped.
I haven't seen the new cast so I can't comment on the current level of talent.

It didn't win a Tony.
It won 8 Tonys.
Do a search, dear.
This has been discussed ad nauseum.

I love how new posters love to come on here and act like their poop doesn't stink, like they are number one. It ticks me off.

How's about because it was a great show that spoke the the younger generation, had excellent music and attacked adult themes and problems with maturity?
TooDarnHot, is that you?

That's the problem... DEAR.
I don't agree with any of the junk that's been said.
It's an overrated mediocre snore.
The lyrics are disgustingly flowery and the music is bleh.

Flowery? The two most popular songs are "The B@#)% of Living" and "Totally F@#$%ed"
You are entitled to your opinion, but legions of fans disagree, not just Tony voters, but all those who kept the show alive for so long. I love the show.

Says the person who equates Patti LuPone to Jesus and Liza Minelli.
Let's be serious for a moment, shall we? I'm not knocking your right to have an opinion. There are plenty of people on here and out in the world who very strongly dislike SA. While I personally am absolutely in love with it, I can understand how someone wouldn't enjoy it. There are numerous shows I hate that others absolutely adore (Billy Elliot being one). But don't join this site and after four days think you can just come in and **** all over everything. When you post a detailed reason why you think SA was bad, then people will legitimately answer you. Until then, get your "hot mess" self off of the boards... DEAR.

Maybe though I don't think the original poster woulda liked it even if Liza and Patti (and Jesus?) were in it.
Seriously, people like different things. I hate a ton of the Tony award winning shows out there. I dunno, I guess I just don't get the tone of the original post--the tTony voters have diff taste than you I suppose is the only way to answer the "question"--

Tony Voters vote, and they choose the winner. Then these envelopes with the names of the nominees get opened and they find out.
It's televised and everything, surprised you didn't know...

Liza + Jesus = Patti, most people on this board back up their statements with specifics and details.
Until you provide those, please go away.

I haven't seen the new cast, maybe if you'd see the OBC it would have been a better experience.
That said, I thought SA was over-rated as well. I didn't hate it, but once was enough. My problem was with the Steven Sater adaptation from the original Frank Wedekind play, which is beautifully written and much more engrossing. Not to mention it was an amazingly bold story for the time of its writing. The changes SS made took away from the story IMO. The DS, SS music and lyrics - ehh, at 50 years old it's not likely you'll get me to enjoy a song called Totally F***ed. I did however find the Bitch of Living 'catchy'.
Still it had its good points. The energy of the young cast was a joy to watch and their performances for the most part very good. I thought the lighting was wonderful, loved the starkness of the stage, and for my money Bill T. Jones' choreography was some of the most inovative I've ever encountered. Enhancing and moving the story but not overpowering it. It blended beautifully into the framework of the production. I can't wait to see his genius in Fela!
Personally, I would loved to have seen Grey Gardens win, but it didn't kill me that SA took the spinny thing. So there ya have it - my two cents.

I understand if you don't like it but PAINFUL to sit through? Really?
GOOD VIBRATIONS, BROOKLYN, THE LITTLE MERMAID, GREASE, and other money-hungry messes were painful to sit through. Even if you dislike the show, at least it had some new, fresh theatrical ideas in it unlike the aforementioned garbage.
I don't find it overrated at all. I think it's a masterpiece, to be honest. It's not without its flaws (and they are slight) but I don't get how you could call it painful to sit through...
(After I typed all that I don't really know why I did because I'm now bracing myself to be ripped to shreds.)

I am not the demographic that they went after but I loved it. I work with young people everyday and found it to be exhilarating and it spoke to me: the me of my youth, the me that touches the lives of young people and the me that wants to keep progressing.
I do SOLIDLY agree that the current cast (with a few exceptions) does not do the show justice...but I haven't seen them since August.
I think both the current Wendla and Ilse are better actors than the originals but not as good vocalists. I thing Canonico's Moritz is the weakest of the three that have portrayed him...by far. I didn't get to see Parrish in the role yet, but he's GOT to better than Riabko.
I don't think anyone is wrong for disliking a show, different strokes for different folks. I really didn't like Gypsy, or Phantom or Rent or lots of other shows that were/are massively popular. Doesn't make me right or wrong.
(But along the same lines I always ask: How the hell did Titanic win the Oscar for best picture? HATED it.)

I have to say, if the show currently playing right now were ow it was viewed by Tony voters, it wouldn't have won, not even nominated for an award.
The Original Cast were all fantastic when the show started. The Cast now is terrible, as are some of Michael Mayer's "changes" to the show. It is a mess, and as a fan, I say it deserves to close.

Changes? I have not seen the show recently and did not realize there were directorial adjustments. If it ain't broke...
