Posted: 4/18/08 at 2:55pmIMO, ACA will slug it out through the day of the Tony nominations. They can force-feed the Barnes review in their advertising before then. After the Tony nominations, I think if it gets nominated for Best Musical or has multiple nominations covering a bunch of different categories. it will advertise "Nominated for X number of nominations," even if Best Musical isn't one of them. I doubt that it will make a good showing at the Tonys (ITH, Passing Strange and Xanadu, maybe Glory Days, depending on how that works out), plus VERY stiff competition in the performance categories. THEN I think it will have to sweat it out week by week. From what I've seen and read (my ticket is for May 3rd), I don't think anything in it, if televised, will do much to save the show. Just my thoughts.

I second that, this thread was started by someone who just wanted to make a thread and build off the animosity of the review thread

I think that there has been a bit of a double standard here with regards to ACA and Cry Baby. The negative opinions expressed about ACA have seemed to me to be much more respectful. Even Brantley's review while negative was quite civil. It seemed gentle for him.
On the other hand, the criticism of Cry Baby has been like gleeful hate. Many people seem to be looking forward to seeing it trashed by the critics. Am I wrong?

Posted: 4/18/08 at 5:50pmFocusing on when a show might close is the last thing our theatre community needs (LOST JOBS, LOST BUSINESS, etc). There are plenty of other topics we can discuss without becoming fortune tellers about the date of a show's closing performance.

I have read a couple of reviews one in the New York Times which panned the show and another in the New York Post, which got a superb review 4/4 stars.
The woman in White got this review and did not last long (3 months), will Catered Affair last longer?

Won't be very long.
And I have to admit I secretly wish the show fail since the beginning. Since when Harvey Feinstein's over-the-top Tevye left a very bitter taste in my mouth long ago.
yeah, I am mean like that.

Posted: 4/18/08 at 10:05pmYou really hold a grudge sanda. What did Harvey actually do to you ezcept not meet your expectations. I don't understand why anyone would want a show to fail. I mean, you can dislike a show, be disappointed in it, think you could have done some aspect of it better, but why want it to fail?

Harvey Feinstein is the most overrated actor, the most overrated writer in this board. The close second is Patti Lupone.
They should star in "Sweeney Todd" with Lupone as Sweeney and Feinstien as Lovett. Man, that could be a good comedy which may impress me a little.

the show will last until the Tony Awards. And then. . . .poor Tom and Matt. They deserve better.
How about Matt in a revival of I LOVE MY WIFE? :)

I don't think it will last long.
I really liked "A Catered Affair." But I listened carefully to audience members around me, who were not "theatre people", but the audiences who carry a show. They hated it.
It was just like "Passion." Audiences hated that show too, even though I loved it. (And I wanted to smack every one of their faces for saying it was "boring.")
But it's one thing to appreciate the craft of a musical, and quite another to expect the show to be a crowd pleaser.
I hope "A Catered Affair" runs as long as it can. But judging from the overheard audience perspective, I don't think it stands a chance.
