sorry yet another thread jack- Do you think Les Miserables will be revived anytime soon? I'm guessing it'll be quite a long time, I was just wondering because it's one of my favorite shows.

Actually, I'm hoping that the awful movie version of "Phantom" sends people running like hell back to the show.

Apparently the movie did have some impact as POTO was #2 at the Broadway box office for a while. Usually it's lower.
Phantom has already run way, way, way too long.

Bumping this thread because I'm curious about what people think now. Back in 2005 many posters said Phantom would run 3 to 5 more years. Any thoughts ? Wisecracks? Snark?
As long as there are foreign tourists who speak no english but know every word to the score and freely sing along with it like they were at a karaoke bar, PHANTOM will always have a home in New York.
I don't understand it, but Phantom isn't likely to be going anywhere. Ever.

I've seen it 43 times in NYC and I've never heard anyone sing along. But who know. Still lots of performances I don't go to where it could happen
I've seen if 5 times and EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. it sounds like I'm at Marie's Crisis.

Never heard anyone sing. I hear people try and translate for each other and I always stop them and they stop.

It feels kinda weird reading this now. For a sec, I didn't realize that the original thread was from 8 years ago and was really confused (I was like...what?? I thought that The phantom was the longest running show on broadway..??). I actually like Cats better than The phantom and hope that they would do a revival. It's been like what..over a decade since they closed?? I feel like there should be a revival in the next few years.
I give it 20 more years.
Phantom will run for a while, but Christine may just jog. She's really a yoga person anyway.

When you guys say "too long" what do you mean? Is a Broadway show only allowed to run for a certain amount of time? I think it's weird that you're saying this. The show employees a large amount of people, is filling the house up every night, and is a favorite among many. Why are we saying it's running "too long"?

Starship, be warned, a lot of people on this board get really mad when anybody uses the "but the show employs a lot of people" excuse as a reason for a show to stay running.
With that said, saying that any show has run too long is usually a matter of opinion, or in some cases a matter of ignorance. Some assume that a show like Phantom isn't kept fresh, but the fact is that Harold Prince, the original 1988 director, still rehearses the cast frequently and observes performances and gives notes to the cast.

I'm unsure if anyone can say a certain show has been running for "too long." With that said, one thing that I find kind of disturbing is the fact that the show has become a tourist destination. I state this from my personal experience, so I'm not sure if other people would agree. As someone living in Manhattan, I have a lot of friends (like friends from college) that visit and unless they're particularly interested in musical theater, the first time they're in New York, they go and watch Phantom. I mean, I like the show and think that it's a classic, but I feel that a large percentage of the audience are people who were just like...I'm in NY, so I have to see a broadway show, god I can't decide, guess I'll just go see Phantom.
It could go on forever if they freshen it up. For me, it is starting to show its age.

I think there is a pride element to consider as well. I think both ALW and CM would not want to see this show close in their lifetime, and they can easily afford to offset weekly losses forever. Really. Forever. Well, as long as they live. If Phantom started having weekly losses, I think the only way they'd close it is if each of them got another big hit.
The thing with Phantom is that it's the easiest commercial show. It has become a brand. We are forgetting one thing the Really Useful Group is a very strong and smart theatrical company, they know how to pick their audiences and market shows to them. They had successes (Phantom, Cats) and some flops ( Starlight[which I love] and Aspects of Love [which I like as well]) in Broadway. Some failures work well in London and Europe. Starlight Express is currently on a 25 year run in Germany. The other key thing that works for Phantom is that everybody knows Phantom so it is the go-to show for tourists. Cameron Mackintosh is also one of the smartest producers in the biz. He knows what he needs to do to keep a show running long. I see Phantom running for a long time. I don't like the show, but that's my preference, but it'll run for a very long time.
quadruple post sorry, I did it from a cell phone don't know why it posted 4 times.
