How much longer for Groundhog Day and Bandstand

Sorry for making a whole new thread but I figured my question would get lost in the seas of Tonys comments tonight. I want to see Groundhog Day but I can't get to NYC for a few months (same with Bandstand). Anyone want to guess how long they will stay open? I have hope for GD, but Bandstand worries me!

I think it will be interesting to watch over the next few weeks as no one can really say. Groundhog Day's advance has been steadily growing according to Riedel. I think they will easily make it through summer but after that it's kind of up in the air. Bandstand is a different story. They did win a tony tonight so they can market it as a tony winning production, along with one of the best performances on the Tonys tonight. Jill Bidens speech when introducing the show was also incredibly passionate and moving. It will be interesting to see if that is able to sell some tickets. And their new artwork is absolutely incredible. I can see them also holding out for summer but after that whose to say

I'm guessing Bandstand until Labor Day, Groundhog Day until January, and Come From Away will last the year with the original cast and then close.

COME FROM AWAY is grossing $1 million and should recoup shortly. I think the show will have a long run. I agree about Bandstand & Groundhog Day. I think both run until the end of the year.

"Bandstand" did win for Best Choreography; now that's not Best Musical but it is a great notice/award that can be posted and marketed.

I imagine Bandstand will try to hang on through the summer, and probably close in the fall once the tourist trade dries up. I'm guessing Sweat and Six Degrees of Separation will post closing notices sometime this week.

I would love to see both shows have a long run.  GHD had the perfect opportunity to market itself at the Tony's for those who haven't seen it but totally missed the mark with its song choice, in my view.  On the other hand, Bandstand nailed it with a boost from Jill Biden.

Totally agree. Although I'm having a hard time thinking of what song GHD could have done that would have worked out of context and without the set. I really think it would have had to been a medley but their time slot was just too short. Maybe Andy should have pulled a DHP and just stood in the center of the stage to sing "Hope"?

Ghd will be lucky to make it past labor day. 

Bandstand probably won't make it past labor day either and I agree about cfa. It's not now but will die off in a year kinda like fun home (and that actually won the tony).

Groundhog Day also cost a ton of money to mount- $17.5 million. If they don't keep their grosses up, they'll have to close.

I don't know what Bandstand capitalized at but I would guess it's lower.

None of GhD's songs sell the show well. If they could have managed to find a way to quickly do the beginnings of each day, I think that might have sold tickets and showcased Andy. Logistically and financially it wouldn't work, sadly. 

I think, rightly, that they don't do "Hope" for a couple reasons:

1. Backlash when people learn that it's really about wishing for a successful suicide. 

2. Wanting into separate themselves from DEH and not mention suicide. 

3. Using a more upbeat number to draw people in  

I know Tim Minchin performed it at the Olivier Awards, but the show was well known there, as is Tim's type of humor, so they could get away with it. 

I think Bandstand & GHD last the summer. Actually, just based on the awards, I wouldn't be surprised if Bandstand outlasted GHD.

I agree with 10086Sundays. I love Tim Minchin's score for GHD, but it really has a showcase problem for televised award shows. There really aren't many songs that have significant content from the lead but also involve the rest of the cast (which, Dolly notwithstanding, is a usual prerequisite for the Tony performance). Many of the best songs in the show belong to other cast members. Additionally, for those that work, I think a big part of the problem with GHD TV performances is the sheer number of edits that they'd need to do to get Tim Minchin's lyrics to be PG or PG-13 (this was also evident in the awful choice of song for GMA--Philanthropy? Really?)

If I had my time again--this is a Barrett song, with little Andy, and what Andy does do would need to be radically changed to remove all the masturbation and sex discussion

One Day-- Another Barrett song 

Nobody Cares: This is a harmony song with Andrew Call and Ray Lee. No solo Andy

Hope-- this might work, but the staging is suicide centric, so I just can't see them using it

Night will Come: John Sanders Song

Yep, that is Tony award that can be marketed. For a show that needed a boost, they did well last night. I saw it in April and really enjoyed it, hope it can make it at least thru Labor Day weekend.

Bandstand will last through the summer I am sure, and Groundhog Day seems to be something people really enjoy, so who knows?  Both are fantastic shows.

You made some really good points that hadn't occurred to me. It is a tough score to represent on television in 2-3 minutes.

It's such a shame - a real opportunity missed. I think they could've made One Day work if they started at the point where Phil asks Rita what she looks for in a guy and take it through to the end (minus the snowball fight scenes). It showcases them both and brings in the rest of the cast; wouldn't need to rely on many props and so could do without the stage rotation. Also would be ~clean enough for broadcast. Probably over-long but it could have been a great advertisement for them.

The only thing CFA has in common with Fun Home is that they are musicals.  Fun Home had a very short run for a best musical winner (reminder: it also played in a small theatre) because, for all the people on this board who loved it, there were a lot of people who hated it...and NOT because of homophobia.  They hated it because it was so damn dreary, at least that was the collective view of the four people with whom I attended the show.  It didn't last long because it never attracted a broader audience.

On the other hand, CFA will attract the exact audience that did not see Fun Home.  It will get the tourists, the people from the suburbs, etc., because word of mouth is in its favor.  Also, per the other post, the average viewer rates it as one of the top 3 performances last night.  That is going to help too, especially given that Evan Hansen and Hello Dolly tickets are unavailable.  Minimum 3 year run.

Bandstand I think will benifit to get it through at least the summer from last night. I thought not only was the performance one of the better of the night but it was a genius idea to have Jill Biden introduce it and appeal to the idea that it's a show that supports veterans. They made the most of their few minutes. 

Groundhog Day on the other hand... eek. Who do they have over there picking out the numbers they are going to perform on TV cus I don't know what was worse, this or the didn't translate well at all performance from GMA.

I think BANDSTAND will try and stick until New Years, as will GROUNDHOG DAY. Unless they get more big Broadway stars, WAR PAINT will likely close when Patti and Christine leave. I give COME FROM AWAY until New Years 2019, a la SOMETHING ROTTEN.

GREAT COMET had the most successful performance of the night, but I'm not sure how long it will run. For sure though next year, but I'm not sure how long in to that.
