"Terrence Howard, Anika Noni Rose, James Earl Jones and Phylicia Rashad head the all-black cast of the latest Broadway revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," set to open at the Broadhurst in March.

Jones ("Fences," "On Golden Pond") and Rashad ("A Raisin in the Sun," "Cymbeline") play the patriarch and matriarch, respectively, of the wealthy clan.

"Cat" begins previews Feb. 12, 2008 for a March 6 opening at the Broadhurst. Engagement is so far set to run through April 13."

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

This is incredibly exciting. This REALLY is the season for plays. I can't wait to see Anika Noni Rose back on Broadway. The Tony race just got much more interesting than it already was.
Jones is a perfect choice for Big Daddy.

My God. It'd be a crime to miss this one.

That said, and even considering the incredible cast, is it really going to run for only two months? That seems like such a short amount of time.

I bet it can extend up until the point that Equus goes into the Broadhurst.

And brava for Anika Noni Rose!

We did a production of CAT at the local LORT theatre here in Richmond VA about seven years ago with an African-American cast, and it worked extremely well. Tamara Tunie played Maggie. Very powerful production and what seemed like it might be stunt-casting was absolutely seamless.

I remember when I was in Cleveland and we were in neogitations to present the premiere of what turned out to be the Kathleen Turner production -- 15 years ago? James Earl Jones was supposed to be the Big Daddy in that production, so I am glad to see he is finally doing it!!

I KNOW WHAT I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS!

I have to see this. 2007/2008 The year of the play. This is going to be an amazing show. Debbie Allen directing her big sister, does that tickle anyone other than me?
I don't care so much for the current publicity materials on the website, but whatev, with this casting they could draw a circle in poo, and people would flock to see this show.

This really IS the Season of the Straight Play. I hope this means the Tony's will have some straight theatre performances showcased.

My only concern is Allen's direction. Yeah, I know she directed a lot of TV...

But this is "Cat."

The cast is fantastic, though. And even if it ends up with pedestrian staging, they'll likely rise above it.

This will be a HUGE hot ticket!

Well, the director worries me but really, with this cast I doubt that even she can mess it up.
Terrence Howard should be an exciting Brick and I actually like the idea of Anika Noni Rose as Maggie better than Audra McDonald.

I don't like the idea of Rose better than Audra...but I do like it almost as much!

Oh...and Philcrosby...was your Big Daddy in Richmond someone named Rodney Hudson?

I OFFICIALLY have to get to NYC for my Spring Break!

With this, LuPone's 'Gypsy', and 'Sunday in the Park with George'... its just necessary!

Somehow I can't understand how an African American cast would bring any new textures to a play that is set on a Southern plantation and has servants called "Lacy" and "Sooky".

Didn't we just have a revival of this three years ago?

I'm so tired of Phylicia Rashad's duplicate performances. Snooze...

I bet James Earl Jones will be marvelous, though.

as excited as I am for this cast (i love me some Anika and Rashad) but Allen's direction has me worried. I don't know if she can pull this off and also it doesn't have audra

Yes, Rashad is the only one of the bunch that I feel iffy about. I can't wait to watch this either way. Howard, Jones, and Rose on stage together...wow!

He is an Oscar-nominated actor who has turned a series of great performances. Most recently he played opposite Jodie Foster in THE BRAVE ONE, and though the movie was just okay, both of them played really well against each other. He's a wonderful actor, IMO. This will be his Broadway debut.

Terrence Howard is a well-regarded film actor who, among other wonderful performances, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor two years ago for his performance in Hustle and Flow. He's also really good as Thandie Newton's husband in Crash, as well as a small part in Ray. I doubt if he's thirty years old, but he's a really great actor -- definitely one of the best of this generation.

EDIT -- rayandallthatjazz beat me to the punch.

A great "film actor" doesn't always equal "great actor."

Look at Julia Roberts.
