So last night, I had an AMAZING time in theatre. I got to see the touring production if Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life at OCPAC.
Let me just say that Chita was just fantastic. She has such a great stage presence. The minute I saw the silhouette of Chita, I was about to burst into tears! It was just amazing.
By the way, I loved her ending speech about performing just for that one person in the audience but I can't remember the exact words... Does anybody know it?

Sadly she isn't touring anywhere near me, but I second the love!
Just came back from the closing performance. She was wonderful. However I was sad to see that she was playing to a house that was only at about 40 %.

Ohh, I know...
But OCPAC is pretty big.
And oh my gosh, I was the only student doing the rush... Everybody else were seniors. I felt a little embarassed.
Chita was just amazingly sweet at the stagedoor, however.
Yeah.. but OCPAC normally has no trouble filling their seats. I have never seen it so empty. And what is weird is that we bought our tickets months ago and they put us all the way in row O. I changed them to row E tonight right before going in. You would think that with so many empty seats they would offer some kind of a lottery or discounts through Goldstar or something.
Tobias.. you should had driven to OCPAC. there were a lot of people there tonight that went there because of the LA cancelation.
I saw it last week!!! I loved it. I know it sounds ridiculously cliche but she truly is inspiring! She is just a fantastic performer all around and her stories were awesome (although I could imagine that if you did not know what she was talking about, then you would not enjoy the show). Meeting her was also a treat! She is very sweet and very professional!

Inspiring, I think, IS the word I'd describe her performance. She was just adorable!
Never mind that. Go see this show.
Good. I just can not understand why this show is failing on the road. You would think schools and universities would make it required viewing.

Unfortunately the subscribers dont know who Chita Rivera is.......
I saw her as the Leader in Zorba on tour when I was in high school, and 30 years later on Broadway in Kiss of the Spider Woman. I think she's fantastic!

"I love Chita!!!"
Me too! I saw the Dancer's Life in nyc 2x. amazing experiences.
How have the houses been everywhere else on the tour?
I saw the show in Philadelphia January 14th, 2007. The house was pretty full, but I did notice people moving up because some seats in the front rows never got filled. (That wasn't good. There was a very overenthusiastic man who couldn't HELP but scream how much he LOVED Chita every time she said ANYTHING. It was cute at first, but annoying as hell by the end of the second act. I did wish I had duct tape then.)
This show was one of the most enjoyable things I have seen onstage. I only wish I could see it again...but I do plan on going to see "The Visit" in September/October/whenever it's down at the Signature Theatre.
What songs were cut from the national tour of a dancer's life?

"Where You Are" was cut, I think.
I am still sad the LA stop was cancelled
Funny/Horrifying Story about this show:
When I saw DRS at the Colonial Theatre in Boston, the friend who I went with overheard these two older women talking about the next show that they had tickets for. The one women told the other:
"Next we have Chiquita Rivera in The Dancer's Life"
He looked over and sure enough that's how the women had it written down in her date book, as "Chiquita"!!!

I had a teacher who saw Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life on its closing night (she didn't know it was closing) and said she loved it and how personable Chita seemed from where she was sitting (6th/7th row orchestra). She saw The Times They Are A-Changin' on closing night too. I commented that she has the ability to make shows close...so I told her to buy tickets to see Tarzan ASAP.
