Good for Lin, I remember him being very passionate about getting this movie done back in the day. Amazing what opportunities he's getting due to Hamilton.
Damn, I was hoping this wouldn't happen so I could someday make it myself. There's no way it's not going to be a disappointment, especially with a mere $15 million budget.
The low budget was something that Lin always wanted (for some reason), something about he wanted it to have an indie feel.

Lin has replied to someone on Twitter saying that he will not star as Usnavi due to his age. He probably could have gotten away with it a few years ago when he was still baby-faced but all of his hard work has paid off by making him look his age unfortunately.
I hope Chris Columbus directs this. He knows how to make NYC feel really gritty and real on film.
Maybe Corbin?

Great idea. He's also great at making actors who are too old for their parts completely realistic.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York really is a shining cinematic example of urban decay.

Richard LaGravenese made The Last Five Years in NYC for $2 million (distributed by Weinstein), so that may have reinforced Weinstein's belief that ITH could be done on a shoestring budget.
Lin could still play Usnavi if they wig him. If 74 year old Barbra Streisand can play the roughly 40 year old Rose, Lin can play Usnavi.

I think the budget is too small. They should raise it it like 30 million. If done and marketed right the movie has potential to have decent earnings. It's a feel good musical. 15 million makes me think they have no faith in its earnings.
Updated On: 5/31/16 at 07:52 PMThe only faith Weinstein has is the ability to sell the film based on marketing it as being from the creator of Hamilton.

If I remember correctly, the first time they wanted to make the film it had a proposed budget of 30 Million dollars but the film was scrapped because the producers didn't think they had enough famous hispanic actors to really draw people in.

The Hollywood reporter said universal wanted a budget of 37. That makes much more sense. I guess I see point about the lack of Hispanic movie stars which is sad. I do think the movie has potential especially among immigrant communities. It's family friendly and feel good.

If It was shot in North Carolina or Toronto w tax credits( and exchange rates!) and non union crew. It could be done for about 25 Million, depending on the cost of scoring.
I "get" that it's a New York Story but Good Will Hunting was a Boston story and yet only 20% was shot in Boston, the rest in TO, so Yeah.
I imagine this will have a similar release to Last Five Years - mostly geared to On-Demand/Streaming rather than a major release. They are probably thinking they can get a high ROI - with the Hamilton name attached. Makes sense.

Lin could and should play Usnavi. The character's age is never referenced. with some make up and a wig he could easily pull off a 20-something Usnavi
