I remember when people thought Lysistrata Jones reviews would be a bloodbath.
Lord Brantleys review should be fun.
Why do you think that? I never really understood why you hate him so much.

Only on this site could you open a thread titled reviews of a play with 27 responses and find out there are NO reviews yet! LOL

Isherwood has been getting more and more of the big musicals it seems--will Brantley even review it?

Maybe everyone at the Times finally realized what an a$$hat Brantley is.

"Maybe everyone at the Times finally realized what an a$$hat Brantley is. "
A) He gets first refusal as to what he wants to review.
B) That statement is rich considering he's on point far more frequently than that glorified fan fiction writer Isherwood.

Brantley is NEVER on point.
Seems he's "refused" a lot lately.
But hey, that's my opinion.

That's correct.

And for what it's worth, of the 26 Broadway shows that have opened this season up until now, Brantley has reviewed 16 of them. And only 4 of Isherwood's 10 have been in the past month. I'd hardly say Brantley's been refusing a lot lately.

Do you really think that if Brantley is never "on point," that the paper of record would retain him as their first string theater critic? When Brantley feels he may be predisposed not to like a show for whatever reason, he passes it on to Isherwood so that his bias won't get in the way. I don't know if that was the case with ...Paris but it has been in the past.

I would take Isherwood over Brantley any day.

I far prefer Brantley to Isherwood. Can't stand Isherwood's writing and usually agree with his opinions only slightly more than that.
Brantley tends to gush, but the essence of his opinions are usually on target. Rarely do I read something of his and think he got it completely wrong.

He got IF/THEN wrong in my opinion. What a terrible review. It wasn't even a review, more like a summary. He didn't say anything about it.

I can't recall a string of reviews that were so brief with Teachout and Feldman both according it but two paragraphs. They certainly aren't giving it much space. They are pretty much what I anticipated, with comparisons to 70s sitcoms but praise for the game cast.

Here is Richard Seff's review on DCMetroTheaterArts.
"By the time it was over, it had gained my respect, and I found I'd had a most enjoyable time As I've said, none of it could have happened, not in one day, not in one family, not in 100 uninterrupted minutes, but to paraphrase the wedding planner, I'm sure glad I didn't call in sick today."

WSJ is mixed-to-negative, with praise for the cast (and DHP, I think).
BritishTheatre.com (who?) sounds pretty positive!

Time Out New York always has very little space. It's not up to the writers.

Huh? I would say treachout in WSJ is a devastating pan. Hardly mixed. Other reviews are mixed, saying funny in a sit come way and some saying it coulda been worse. Will these bring in money at the box office. Time will tell.

What's the point of a review thread if you don't post the links?

There's a whole updating article dedicated to the links, I use this thread to hear other people's opinions on the reviews and see if they picked up anything I missed.
